Either they didn't get the credit they deserved, or have become forgotten since their heyday. I think the 1984 C4 falls into that category. As fast as an original Jag XKE, or Ferrari Dino 246 GTS (7 secs 0-60 mph, 140 mph), but don't get much love. Similarly, there were the blown Y block Fords, that had the HP Mustangs had 10 years earlier. Which other cars would you add?

I would add the original 3 series here.

Preceded by 2002 and superseded by e30, that's quite a gap to be in. Both 2002 and e30 have plenty of track rep, and while e21 appeared in Group 5 races, it never had the racing pedigree that defined BMWs back then. It's always been the BMW for me, so I didn't actually pay attention to the "fame factor" for a long time. It's 40th anniversary of e21 this year and now that they have almost disappeared they're slowly getting some appreciation as classics.
