Right now I think the cheapest hd dvd player is the xbox 360 hd dvd player. Am I right? Also, does it come with a movies?

Is there anything cheaper than the 180$ xbox player?

BMW M5 my advice is leave it for now. There is word of a plethora of dual type drives arriving after christmas. Basically that will mean you can go out and buy whatever format you want be it HD or BluRay. Alternatively wait till the format wars win out. Last thing you want is to waste 100+ on a device that goes down the drain in a few years due to nothing being available.

blu-ray can go suck a dick, region locking is crap

Wait until things have been settled. It would suck to invest in one particular format and not be able to use it.

Besides, HD VMD is going to come out on top. Red laser backwards compatibility + No DRM + way cheaper than the two scams (HD DVD / BR) = total WIN.

I think HD-DVD will win it
Nah, Blu-Ray is more future proofed and technically can deliver higher quality Audio and Video, which will make the enthusiast go for it. Higher bitrates for Video data (up to 50+MBps vs 40-48? MBps) and nothing beats uncompressed Audio (HD-DVD might do this, but I am not sure).

And it costs more to produce. Not only the discs, but the actual Blu-Ray diodes. Current DVD fabs can easily convert to HD-DVD. The hardware is cheaper. All they need is more studio support.

The higher quality video is a wash, as both use VC-1. You don't need lots of storage space for quality-compressed video.

Well.........if we look at it in the context of the last format war.........I've heard that one of the biggest reasons why VHS won out over Betamax casettes was because the porn industry decided to go with VHS. Betamax was a higher quality format, but VHS was cheaper and easier to produce.

So that leads up to where we are now......and I've heard rumor that most of the porn industry is signing on with HD-DVD rather then Blu-Ray. It may not correlate, but we'll see I suppose. I kind of have a feeling that HD-DVD will win out, but have no real basis for that feeling (just a gut reaction I guess).

Want to know something?

They both look exactly the same, and sound exactly the same.

I have the 360 with HD-DVD and a ps3

Actually, I read an article a few weeks back exactly on the topic of why the porn industry will have NO EFFECT whatsoever on the format wars. I'm trying to dig it up, gimme some time.

Edit: okay, couldn't find that article, but I did find this: http://www.tech.co.uk/home-entertai...o-make-its-blu-ray-debut?articleid=1986963734
and this: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=368

I have the same setup, so i buy movies in both formats, i dont give a flinging five about the format wars right now. Plus ive watched the same movies in both formats on my tv and yes, i can't tell the difference in audio and sound either.

Yeah, as I said if a movie is available for both i'll always buy the HD-DVD version for said region locking issue.
