Just subscribed to /r/FinalGear.

I'm /u/SgtBrowncoat on reddit. If you want some help setting up automoderator, I can pull my configuration from one of my other subs and set it up.
Yo, that would be awesome, thanks - I'll add you ASAP.

I accepted the invitation. I will get Automod configured and running as well as a few other anti-spam tools, such as BotBust as soon as I can.

Confirmed: Viper has been having further issues preventing him from seeing the computer screen, let alone upgrading the forums. I suspected something was up, I feared the worst.

In time I hope he can continue so I wouldn't worry about having to find a replacement just yet. I wonder if anything can be turned off in vB to get a bit more speed back in the meantime, this can't be normal for the software so it must be something specific to FG that could be dumped or turned off to get it back to normal.

Edit: I have discovered a workaround that may help and indicate the original cause of the problem. This thread and specifically this post suggests the user settings are a little caddywompus after the upgrade to vB 5 and it's trying to load the whole everything every time and it is improved by turning the 'Post Per Page' down. It's in User Account > Account. Set it to 10 posts per page, it doesn't seem to accept anything else. If you haven't already, then turn off the signatures and avatars. Once I did this the performance was dramatically increased. Worth a try, might save the forums. :)

Shit news about Alex. Thoughts with him as always.

Thanks for the suggestion - speeded the forum up a hell of a lot for me.

My condolences to Viper and his ongoing health issues. I know from both professional and personal experience the ugliness that is blood-borne cancer. I hope he can continue to recover.

On the topic of the forum and Berserker’s reddit alternative, is it active? I mean I saw only a few posts just “testing” it, or is there another place we can all congregate? I miss you all dearly and although my absence has largely been due to significant personal upheaval, it’s also partly due to how poorly the forums currently operate so I would love to know where to go to keep up with all of you.

Does anyone think a Discord server might be the way to go? They’re intended for videogames, but I don’t see why we couldn’t use one for *all* our FG purposes if it suited us. I have one set up if anyone is interested (and if the reddit isn’t a go, I’ll wait and participate there if it’s going to work)

With all due respect, setting up an alternative platform - or worse, several - will kill this community even faster.

Viper007Bond, I can hardly imagine how difficult a time you are having with your health issues. I wish you all the best and I fully understand that migrating the forum to another software is not your top priority right now.
But we are seeing the frustration getting the better of many of us. Most people just cease posting, some are actively setting up camp elsewhere. I am not sure how much longer this community can survive this state of limbo.
Please, let us help you. Delegate. There are enough IT people here to do some or most of the stuff that needs to be done.

There is an active #Gear group on Telegram. If you want to join, all you have to do is install the app and share your telephone number with someone, who is a member (eg. myself), so you can be added. There are also subgroups for stuff like Ringmeets, roadtrips and tentacle porn :D

I'm literally running a test import into Xenforo as we speak. Due to the size of the forums, it takes a couple days to run.

I started working on it a few months ago but ran into some issues with the importer that they have since fixed. After that, I literally couldn't read my computer for about a month. Even now my vision sucks.

Let me join the chorus of "feel free to delegate stuff".
I can't delegate an 5.5 gigabyte database dump that has passwords, emails, etc. in it but thanks. :)

I will however delegate testing once I get the test site up and running.

Jesus man, what a bizarre and unexpected complication. If it makes you feel better, my vision is naturally something like 20/500 and I can drive just fine :)

Hit me up with whatever you need man. If sensitive data is involved, I'll even sign some funny paperwork if you need me to ;). That gives me an idea.. I should start having people sign waivers for Ringmeet.. GDPR and all?! After all I have bank data and other personal data of most Ringmeet people, let alone some of their money :D

Is it just me, or is the site running quickly today?

Has something been done to fix it?
I've noticed the speed for a week or maybe two...maybe.

Edit: except when posting. lol

Quiky rose from the dead and fixed some issues with the database server. There's still some issues but yeah, should be way faster now.

I still want to switch to XenForo though which I like a lot better than vB. I have a test site nearly working -- just needs some server configuration changes for pretty URLs to work.
