The "New Toys" Thread

Didn't bother to hook them up, but my sister hooked her PS2 up to her 22" a little bit ago and they sound like shit (same speakers I believe). Not surprising seeing as how they're 1" in diameter and only 3W.

I'll stick to my 500W 5.1's. ;)

I thought the Altec Lansing's on my laptop would be alright...but they don't do much for me. Was just curious what they're like on a monitor like that. My old school Boston Acoustics 5.1 setup gets the job done pretty well when I'm at the desk.

wat. you have designated porn headphones? did you tape a tissue dispenser and jergens bottle to them or something?

Nah I tried that and it did not work too well, but they the pair that I don't care about messing up and stuff, and plus they get a lot of use so the cable that detaches is wearing out, so I think I will get a new pair of AKGs and put the old ones on porn duty.

Too much information.

Nice setup Viper, welcome to the world of long-term eyesight and quality viewing.
And neck aching from turning my head. :lmao:

That starts with 2 screens. I was on camchat with my gf while i was working and chatting to her and she kept teasing me if i was watching tennis or something.

No, my main monitor alone is so big that I have to turn my head. I even pushed it back like another 6 inches from where I had my old one.

ARGH... bloody Frys are slow with their rebate specials.. Gonna have to wait until Friday before that special starts.

Newegg has what are probably better quality ones for not much more. :p

I know, problem is you cant return the monitor unless it has more than 7 dead pixels, where as if I were to buy at the local Fry's store, i can return it for just not liking it. Big difference there.

For stuff like speakers and monitors, i normally get it from a local store so that if something goes wrong, i can always return it. For PC parts i just order from newegg.

Good exercise though :)

Does it bother your eyes to go back and forth between a CRT and a LCD with your mixed dual setup? I know it used to bug my eyes before I went with dual LCDs, but I have bad eyes to begin with :?

Touche.

Luckily, no dead pixels here that I can see.

CRTs never bothered my eyes to begin with because I ran 85Hz on my 19" and my 17" which runs at 60Hz (due to resolution) has a black background (IRC), so I can't see it flicker.

Plus, my 17" is nearly out of my peripheral vision at this point.

I have that type of set up at work - and it does bug my eyes a little, mainly because the LCD's so much crisper than the CRT.

Ah, I can see how that might hurt, but my CRT is a professional series 21" viewsonic and the LCD is a cheapo 15" dell.

My LCD is definitely crisper (by a lot), but it's also a lot... brighter / more contrasty I guess. I don't know how to describe it. My CRTs also seem easier on my eyes as it doesn't blind me.

The LCD is better, especially when configured right -- it'll just take getting used to.

You'll find that black backgrounds on an LCD kill your eyes, like your IRC box.

My copy of mIRC has it's own dedicated monitor (the 17" CRT) with a black background. I used to use it for playing videos as well as my 19" CRT was incredibly dark, but I may start using my 24" to watch stuff on. Depends if I want to multitask or not (much easier working on the big monitor -- plus non-HD stuff looks like crap at 24" big).

Great stuff, congrats on that. I know there are some buyers that got fucked over with like 5 or 6 dead pixels and stuck with it because of the 7 pixel policy.

Just ordered the main guts of my new computer (Apart from another hard drive which I'm not sure atm I can afford)
Motherboard:
GIGABYTE GA-EX38-DS4 ATX Intel Motherboard
Gigabyte%20GA-X38-DS4.jpg

RAM:
Patriot Viper 4GB(2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory
patriot%20Viper%20Fin%2001.jpg

HDD:
Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500GB 3.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive
Don't think I need an image for this one
PSU:
PC Power & Cooling S610EPS 610W Continuous @ 40?C Power Supply
Can't find an image for this one that's large enough

Total price: $570.60

I already have the case, and the last things I'll need are an E8400 or an E3110(The Xenon version of the E8400) whenever they come in stock on Newegg, and the graphics card, which should be one of the midrange 9800GTs (When the come out)

EDIT: I need suggestions for what CPU cooler to get when I order it, I'm planning to take the E8400 from 3 to 4 ghz and want it to still be pretty cool. I'm currently looking at a Tuniq Tower (W/ Arctic Silver 5, of course)
