The "New Toys" Thread

I just got myself iPhone SE and I am really suprised how good earpods are.

Do they stay in your ears?

before spectre chimes in, got it over the V1 due to it having a connected app which allows to crowdsource and it being recommended by Alex Roy in one of his columns about how to get away with speeding.

Should arrive by Wednesday so going to take it out for a test drive

I look forward to your impending speeding ticket. :p Hint: Cops read the crowdsource info too.

I don't quite follow your logic here, yes cops read crowdsource info but it's not like they can "remove" themselves from the app to catch people out. I also watched quite a few Vortex Radar test videos and V1 is by far not the most sensitive RD nor is it significantly better than the 360 in everything aside from laser detection, which is irrelevant without a jamming capability. V1 also has basically non-existent filtering*, which in NYC makes it pointless.

*You can run an app that helps with that but the whole point is to not have my phone always running some sort of an app.

In my testing I have been able to get plenty of warning from the radar detector itself even with elevation changes, concrete barriers, trees and a whole bunch of cars in the way. Escort Live integration has also worked quite well, it shows distance to a reported signal source along with an arrow pointing at where it is (aside from the V1 style arrows). Best part about the way it works is that certain types of signals are reported automatically, not via some interface that requires manual entry.

EDIT: I didn't really get it to avoid tickets in the city, it's more for when I drive out to the mountains where I have long stretches of highway to deal with.

EDIT2: Another new toy, the Apple Watch series 3 (non LTE), blame the wife for that, she wanted one and I couldn't let her have a toy and not get one :p

^ Speaking of the Apple Watch, this happened to my series 1 a couple weeks ago...

Yep, that's the display hanging by the wires...

I glued it back on and it's fine but all in all, that wasn't a very Apple-like experience... And with some quick google-fu I determined that it's a relatively common issue on at least the earlier Apple Watches... smh.

Oh and more on-topic, it was an "Asus Gaming Week" recently so I got my mouse a new friend:

Claymore Core keyboard on discount. Cherry Red switches. It's my first mechanical keyboard ever, so it's a learning experience...

That sux about the watch, I did get AC+ and a bumper case for mine as I have a tendency to fuck up my watches.

Oh dear, what have I done?

iPhone X 256GB, on contract through EE in the UK.

After many issues with my Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, mainly focused around music playing and despite a factory reset not long ago, I decided to ditch Android and give iOS a go. Two crashes in one day was the straw that broke my camel's back. I intend to use this for video, photos and I like to carry a large collection of existing photos around with me so the 256GB it is. I won't be storing any music on it as I'm switching over from Google Play Music to Apple Music and it's all streaming, although it's nice to know I can cache everything if I want to. The music app along with everything else just seems to work, something I was really hoping for.

So far I have no regrets. I knew it would be a learning curve at it certainly has been but so far the only frustration has been when I attempted to sync 6000 photos to the phone via iTunes, something that is running in the background right now. It's very slow compared to just dragging and dropping the photos, however the performance viewing those photos on the phone is a vast improvement over the Sony at least. My Moto 360 Android Wear watch and Sony Bluetooth headset both work well and I'm convinced that the music actually sounds better. I've paired it with a Spigen case along with glass screen protector that specifically covers the top bar rather than going around it (yet doesn't affect the face ID) and a wireless desk charger. It may not work when I get the plate in the case for my magnetic mount but time will tell and the base was pretty cheap, despite also being made by Spigen. As an aside the charging base gets its power from a QC3.0 port, handy as that's what I already have from my previous phone.

I know I will be restricted by iOS but after 4 android phones I'm really past that and don't feel that I need to customise them any more. I'd rather reap the benefits of using apps that are designed for a very specific set of devices rather than a sea of them and so far I'm enjoying it. I don't plan to get anything else Apple though, I'm still not a fan of the company and don't look forward to my first visit to the genius bar but to me it's the device that counts.

ONE OF US, ONE OF US!

Gobble gobble gobble!

Seriously though, I've had my X now since November and while still having some buyer's remorse over the price tag, I'm very happy with the device overall. Almost all apps I use have been updated for the new screen format, and most make very good use of the extra real estate.

The only annoyance is that this phone absolutely cannot be used without a case, if you want it to survive for any stretch of time. The glass front and back are unbelievably slippery, to the point where it'll slide off a table that's half a degree off perfectly level.

At the risk of sounding cliche, iPhone does tend to just work, it doesn't have as much customization as Android does and they do like to lock things down to apple only apps/services (like say I can't use Google Maps with my watch) but it is quite stable. I feel like all modern phones need a case if for no other reason than they feel way too thin in my hand.

After a stretch uf burglaries as stores in our street i got paranoid and purchased a Logitech Circle 2 (wired).
Setup would have been easy peasy if it did a validation of the email address _during_ the setup. (i mistyped the domain, thus had to reset the cam and reconfigure it with the correct email address)

I wonder if they deliberately designed it to look like a big nipple. :think:I'm not sure about this idea of cameras that can be removed but I suppose they're always recording to a central location so there's no way for someone to steal the camera without being seen.

Having never used a previous phone I didn't realise there were problems with the new screen format, they have all looked perfect as far as I can tell. The extra length of the screen is fantastic despite the phone being smaller overall than my old Sony.

That's what I'm going for, so far so good! I've even got my head around iCloud, which as it happens is the cheapest cloud storage I have seen. I'm paying 79p a month for 50GB!

Agreed, as much as I like the design and materials used it feels very fragile without a case. I'm currently in paranoid mode and have a big fat Spigen case on it but I might get something smaller later on. the last phone I had which I was happy to use without a case was my HTC OneX+.

I live on the third and top floor of my building. So no innocent people passing by or any visitors. The camera is outside my door aimed at the stairs. Anyone who comes into view get's recorded and it's send to the "cloud" and i get a notification.

So by the time they have removed the camera, they have also been in plain view and i'm notified about it.

The only (unwanted) person who should come into view is the one cleaning the hallway every week.

Also, you should see the wireless one:

Reminds me of the Valve VR dog:

Since her ye olde Toshiba laptop was starting to give out, my eldest daughter needed a new pc. Luckily, a colleague of mine offered me a free Lenovo H530s with Core i7 4770, 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD. Added a few parts of my own:

(EVGA Geforce GTX1050 SC, CM Hyper 212 Evo, WD Green 240GB SSD (not pictured), old CM 430W PSU I had laying around, Intel Centrino 6230, LED strips off Aliexpress, pigtail to proper antenna converters off Aliexpress)

A case:

(Fractal Design Focus G Red, she has taste)

A couple screens:

(A set of second hand Dell P2214H)

This all adds up to one very happy kiddo who is gaming away on her new PC.
