^ you guys need to get out more. Mexico doesn't mean anything to Britain. Not every country has the same priorities and areas of sensitivity that the United States has.

As for their tirade on Mexicans .. I think it was somewhat tongue-in-cheek .. and done in an almost self mocking fashion, given that Clarkson and May portray themselves as xenophobic ultra-nationalists.

I think it was probably okay for the UK. In the United States (where I'm from as well) it wouldn't fly at all. The Mexicans here pick our crops, build our houses and build our office buildings. If you go to a Home Depot in most cities, they are there looking for work.

People here like to blame the illegal immigrants for all kinds of things, but they almost never look to the real guilty party in this issue... the people who give illegal immigrants jobs in order to pay less than minimum wage without having to abide the by the rules of the Fair Labor Standards Act.

I'm sure small minded people who live in the USA, hate Mexicans and view this episode will only use it to further affirm to themselves that their warped ideas about ethnic minorities are correct. Because, you know, it's alright to murder a family if you hate them for being different.

I'm not sure it was OK for the UK, to be honest, nor anywhere. They're smart guys - they should be able to come up with some better repartee than lazy xenophobic stereotyping.

I get the feeling that the Mexico rant was specifically put in to see who would rise to the bait. Had the Daily Mail reported it then Clarkson could have gone off on a rant of great length about the idiocy of the modern media.

Yes we want 'hard working' xenophobic stereotyping.

As a side issue:
I always found it odd that the Spanish and Portugese got South America, and the British and French got North America - look who ended up rich and who poor. I would have thought that South America has at least the same potential as North America. I wonder what went wrong, perhaps they did not have a revolution/freedom at the right time? Anyone know?

Up until the Industrial Revolution Central and South America were way more wealthy due to their superior agricultural output, though also much more unbalanced in the wealth gap between landowners and peasants. Read Paul Kennedy's Rise and Fall of the Great Powers for a history of these flipflops in economic power.

I have traveled to that area of the world lots of times and I have often wondered the same thing. Even in some of their larger cities they do not have reliable utilities. There are people that only have running water 3 days a week. It has puzzled me for a long time. What is the difference? The people seem to be smart, industrious, and hard working, but how can things still be so poor in this day and age.

I watched them putting in a new road in Cozumel MX. There was not one peice of motorized equipment in use. Everything was manuel labor, and they had that road done in the week I was there. Cozumel is a cruiseship port and popular vacation spot and they have millions of visitors a year and yet my hotel maid made approx $8 US a week.

If they did anything motorized in Cozumel it would be with an old Beetle, that's all I saw there. Girls in the car with me had bruises from the punch bug game.

But wow if those Mexico comments had been said on US TV there would be riots (if they got someone to translate for them).

It's nice seeing that the Mexican government has their shit in order; something said on a BBC programme is far worse then their ongoing issues with drugs and numerous murders.
