Those damn super long "Random Thoughts" and "Awesome" threads

But the awesome automotive thread? So much cool stuff gets buried in there, such as this movie trailer.
Users do have the option to create new threads about these sort of things, and it does happen. If they feel the response wasn't up to their hopes they can make a thread for it. Or put that in the DTM thread :|, i didn't watch it or respond to it because i find it "meh." And it's not like only the last page matters in these thread, i still get responses/rep from posts made years ago - people are clearly enjoying sifting through these megathreads.

I'm already subscribed to 137+ threads, i think any 2 reply new thread would get more lost, than an trailer that i will see in one of the big threads when i go back 2 or 3 pages. If we were to split up these threads, we would need more sticky threads for interesting stuff (but then again, how would someone define "interesting" a 20+ reply on a Subthread maybe ?). My biggest concern is, that we all spam all these new threads, i could lose track of some cool stuff (like that trailer, it would be burried into the nothingness of Spam threads). That I otherwise wouldn't because i follow "these massive" threads quite regulary.

Yeah, just snip them more often. I like to treat Random Thoughts as a timekiller by itself, it's so convenient.

I like them as is. Mostly because I just go to UserCP and check them as subscriptions.

I prefer one long meta thread to a bunch of one-to-five post mini-threads. Seems easier to handle.
This, mostly.

You'd also end up with duplicate threads all over the place as once things fall off the first page of General Automotive they rarely resurface. Although I do agree things get buried, I feel the problem is not so much with the idea of big threads to cover a general topic but people being unsure of what is worthy of it's own thread and what's not... A lot of the stuff in the Awesome threads is awesome, but probably not worthy of an individual thread by itself.

This. And that. User CP => open subscribed threads, read, close. I rarely go actively browsing for new threads unless it's about an episode or a new car in the Automotive section... And I guess I'm not alone.

If it doesn't hurt the performance of the forum, why not just keep it?

The large threads have their place. But the problem is that too many things are crammed in to those and people are too hesitant to start threads on subjects.
Those large threads should be used for posts that don't really warrant a discussion longer than few posts. For everything else a new thread should be started.

I personally like the random threads. Frequently, what i have to say would be kind of a waste of a thread. It may be something like a simple question that I'm looking for an answer to, not a discussion. I'm less attached to the "Awesome" threads. Those would be suited for their own thread or model/brand specific thread (like the 911 porn thread).

I'd rather like the superlong thread. I mainly follow this forum through my subscribed threads in User CP.

Als, this thread is useless w/o a poll. :(

I'm with theses chaps. Sure if a subject merits a new thread then fine otherwise I'm happy to leave be.

I'm fine with the way things are. I like the fact there is a rambling, all things automotive thread here.

Let's review some of the recent posts in the Awesome Thread (Auto):

Cars From Wasteland Weekend
Awesome Lambo pic at the 'Ring!
The Sound of DTM
BMW Touring Car Story
Loud CLK GTR
Youngtimer Warsaw meet
Old Swedish snow racing!
Awesome supercar garage
Big rally crash!!!
Big block Chevy pickup

etc etc etc Do you really want all of those as separate threads? Personally, I would much rather have the massive aggregate threads. When I go into the Awesome thread, I know exactly what to expect. Same with Funny pictures and many others. The Random Thoughts threads do drag on but, quite frankly, I have no interest in following them religiously anyways; I go in on occasion and read a page or two or to make a random post.

TL;DR - keep the mega threads!!!

I set my profile up to auto-subscribe to any thread I post in, so I've been subscribed to the megathreads since a long time ago and typically only browse them. My interests are rather narrow and I'm more of a lurker (I check here every day but comment every other day or less), so the current system works fine for me. I've seen thoughts that go on for too long get pushed out of the megathreads into their own thread with their own lively discussions, so I don't see the need to change things.

90 pages of Volvo discussion in the random automotive thread-- Surely that could go elsewhere.

As a possible solution, why not keep the random threads, but If a conversation goes over say, 10 replies, it should be pushed to a new thread. Thoughts?

Leave it to people in the discussion to create the new thread? or report it for a mod to split?

Exactly what I was thinking also.
I enjoy, like many other, the mega-thread awesome-automotive thread because if you miss a few days, weeks, whatever, you have plenty awesomness right there, and if there's plenty of discussion material then a new thread can be made.

Honestly that's how I really feel. I'm not against them in theory but in reality too much stuff gets posted in them that deserves it's own thread.

Having a mod split discussions that end up being more than a couple posts out into a separate thread could work but who wants to do all that work? I certainly don't.
