Two motorcycle racers have been killed in an accident at the start of a Superbike/Superstock 1000 race that supported the World Superbike Championship event at Laguna Seca.

The multi-bike accident happened on the first lap of Sunday?s second MotoAmerica race, with Spaniards Bernat Martinez, 35, and Daniel Rivas Fernandez, 27, both badly injured.

The pair were transported straight to hospital. Martinez was taken to Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula, while Fernandez was sent to Natividad Medical Center. Both later succumbed to their injuries.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, MotoAmerica president Wayne Rainey said: "I really don't have any words to describe what we all feel.

"First and foremost, is the loss to the families and loved ones. Our sincere condolences goes out to each and every one of them as well as the MotoAmerica family. They are in our thoughts and prayers."

"We are deeply saddened to learn the news of the passing of Bernat Martinez and Daniel Rivas," added Gill Campbell, CEO and general manager of Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

"Our prayers and hearts go out to their families and teams."

Local news are reporting that two riders are dead after a disastrous crash in turn one during Laguna Seca's second MotoAmerica Superbike race this afternoon.

Held after the second WSBK race of the day, at least four riders crashed in Laguna's turn one shortly after the start of the race.

At least two riders were transported to area hospitals after the crash. Reports sourcing Monterey law enforcement suggest that two of the riders involved in the incident died.

MotoAmerica and Laguna Seca officials had apparently locked up all motorcycles involved in the incident.

Turn one at Laguna Seca is a fast, challenging high speed bend which has seen modification several times over the past decade.

I think it's Nicky Hayden who once said something along the lines of "Everybody talks about the corkscrew at Laguna Seca, but the really scary turn is turn 1".

Very sad news indeed :(

RIP
