I dunno about New Jersey, but around here, it's not that uncommon to sometimes shorten it to just "porsh".
I choose to pronounce it the way THE COMPANY pronounces it. Maybe it's a Jersey thing.

Hey, I feel like calling Sony just plain "So" from now on...
I didn't say it was a correct pronunciation, I just said it's a common one.

What next -- I can't call a Corvette a "Vette"? images/smilies/wink.gif

Sure you can call a Corvette a "Vette". But "Coor-veete-ey" or "Kar-vit" probably wouldn't fly images/smilies/wink.gif

"Porsh" is clearly a mispronunciation of the proper word. If Adam is a car nut (not to mention a one-time Porsche owner) he should know that.

The accepted term on Rennlist is "P-car". images/smilies/smile.gif

I disagree. I think for most people, including me, it's just a shortening of the word (dropping the last syllable). Same reason one says Vette rather than Corvette -- one syllable is easier and faster to say than two.

Never say never is what my mama used to say! At first it will likely be no better, but we really have no idea whats going to happen in the show. There is plenty of possibility for the show to be greater than the original. JC, Hamster, and May are not the end all be all of car reviews and comedy. They are just the first to really go off into a more entertainment rather than informative approach to car reviews.

You'd never guess after these posts that I was/am still having very low expectations/hopes for the show.

So? Even if it's only half as good, that doesn't make it bad. Half a Ferrari is still better than a Pinto.

Do you call Germany Deutschland in normal conversation? Do you call all of your friends by their full proper names? Don't get your panties in a bunch because of the way something is pronounced in different regions. Unless you feel like bombing England for 'crisps' and 'chips'.

So true. To use a UK example, I never thought that Doctor Who would come back and be any good. But it happened. Granted, the circumstances are very different, but it does show how expectations can be broken. I think the trick is to understand that the two programs are not of a piece. Each stands alone and should be evaluated on its own merits. Obviously comparisons are impossible to avoid, but it's a game of expectations. Set 'em too high and you're bound to have them shattered.

...and thank god! I just listened to the European vacation clip again because I remember enjoying it when it was originally aired, and I broke out into a cold sweat when I heard Danny Bonaduce pipe up.

Loveline was great for the same reason Top Gear is great. The chemistry between Adam and Drew is extremely favorable, just like there is also excellent chemistry between Jeremy/James/Richard. I also think the chemistry between Adam and Danny was somewhere in between unpleasant and repulsive, and thus the year he was on the Adam Carolla show wasn't as good as it should have been.

The chemistry we all love is what makes the uk top gear in my opinion, and it is what will make, or break the American top gear. Adam Carolla is a great start, but even I, a huge fan of the ace man, know that its not him alone that can make a great show, but who else is on the show for him to interact with. I think Jay Leno would still make a good candidate seeing as he is friends with Adam. I would even go as far as to say that I wouldn't mind seeing a non-celebrity buddy of Adam's on the show as well(although I know it won't happen).

Its also important to realize that being a car nut isn't whats important. I am a 100% pure car nut, but I would be a horrible top gear presenter. Adam Carolla is also a car nut, but more importantly, he is clever, quick-witted, interesting, and smart. I know everyone just thinks "man show" and thinks hes all full of dick and fart jokes, but I know better. I for one, am very much looking forward to ace's top gear premier.

Damn good analogy you got there! And what half the people furiously rushing to sign up to vent their fury at HOW DARE THEY STEAL OUR VAULTED BRITISH INSTITUTION fail to realize.

Looks like the attack against Carolla is his apparent attraction for controversy and possibly offensive humor.....hmmmmmmm, I wonder where we've seen that before:

"Most Americans barely have the brains to walk on their back legs"
-Jeremy Clarkson-

"If this were America, it would be full of people doing… whatever it is they do. Incest, mostly."
-Jeremy Clarkson-

"If you're thinking of coming to America this is what it's like. You've got your Comfort Inn, you've got your Best Western, you've got your Red Lobster where you eat. Everybody's very fat, everybody's very stupid and everybody's very rude. It's not the holiday program, it's the truth!"
-Jeremy Clarkson-

Quote:
In October 1998 Hyundai Motor Company complained to the BBC about what they described as "bigoted and racist" comments he made at the Birmingham Motor Show, where he was reported as saying that the people working on the Hyundai stand had "eaten a dog" and that the designer of the Hyundai XG had probably eaten a spaniel for his lunch. Clarkson also allegedly referred to those working on the BMW stand as "Nazis".
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/201675.stm

Quote:
During the 13 November 2005 Top Gear episode, a news segment featuring BMW's Mini Concept from the Tokyo Motor Show showcased what fellow-presenter Richard Hammond quoted as a "quintessentially British" integrated tea set. Clarkson responded by mocking that they should build a car that is "quintessentially German." He suggested indicators that displayed Hitler salutes, "a sat-nav that only goes to Poland" in reference to the Nazi invasion of Poland that marked the start of World War II in Europe, and "ein fanbelt that will last a thousand years," a reference to Adolf Hitler's propaganda slogan of "the thousand-year Reich". These statements drew negative attention in the British news media and from the German Government.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_...man_Government

Quote:
Clarkson reacted to an article in the Daily Mail by Neil Lydon favouring banning Top Gear by describing him as a "sanctimonious, rent-a-soundbite little turd".
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeremy_Clarkson#Top_Gear

Now, this is not a character assassination of Clarkson. It's quite the contraty, actually. Even though I think Clarkson is a complete ass and does some very offensive stuff....the man is funny and can do entertaining reviews and other "cocking about" on the Top Gear show. This is EXACTLY why I will enjoy Carolla.

So if you hate Adam Carolla, then I guess you really hate Jeremy Clarkson, no? images/smilies/lol.gif

small difference, Porsche airs commercials in English and they pronounce it the way it is meant. When you meet people with non-English names do you try to pronounce them the way they wish or do you intentionally mangle them? Really indefensible IMO.

There are examples where. Companies alter pronunciations in different markets, one I can think of is Nikon. The Japanese pronounce it "knee kon" but in the us company ads use the "nigh kon" pronunciation. Porsche doesn't do that. They have never aired a radio or tv ad calling themselves "porsh".

The argument that it's an abbreviation is absurd. "Chevy" is a logical shortening of "Chevrolet".

Then again Brits mysteriously shorten BMW to BM which means "bowel movement" to me.

Listened to that podcast that proves he is a car nut... never knew he was. I barely watch TV anymore... usually, it's Discovery Channel, but if it has to do with cars, I'll watch it. ...even Fifth Gear... LOL... (JC: Diesel...?! Ughhhh. Oh sorry, I just nodded off.)

Like a few others have said, it should prove to be an interesting dynamic with AC vs an opposite personality.

And I haaaaaad to register so I could post, when I heard him ranting about "driving in a police state" getting "chicken shii tickets". He knows it. When ARE we going to take back our streets?! He is the first public figure I've heard speak out about this... will it get something done here in this f'd up "system"... ha... maaaaybe if he is a presenter on the new show.

I'm amazed all of Miami isn't half blind.

I've never met ANYONE that has pronounced Chevy fully, except may be the guy narrating their commercials. Regardless of how red their neck is.

I honestly wasn't going to watch this show anyways, I think part of Top Gear's appeal is its British origins. Choosing a low-rent, racist and half-witted comedian like Carolla simply confirms my suspicions regarding how NBC was going to market this.

No thanks.

Since you couldn't be bothered to read any of the posts in this thread I am going to blatantly rip off nist7's post from the previous page as he did an excellent job at addressing this issue.

Clarkson reacted to an article in the Daily Mail by Neil Lydon favouring banning Top Gear by describing him as a "sanctimonious, rent-a-soundbite little turd".
