What makes TG entertaining to me is how politically incorrect it is, and how they bash some cars purely out of prejudice. Even though I think a good amount of Top Gear material is scripted, they manage to present it in a way that keeps the audience guessing.....IE its hard to tell what is scripted and what is not. Very entertaining.

Why, WHY Adam Corolla!?!?

I mean come on, he has the personality of a fish, and I can't see him being enthusiastic about anything...

My question is this: Why even bother risking catastrophe with a new show when they could do what they have done in every other country, and just broadcast the BBC Version with Jeremy, Richard, and James?

Now you might respond: "They tried that on the Discovery Channel and it didn't pick up."

It would seem that way, but that is incorrect. What was broadcast on TDC wasn't "Top Gear", it was segments of old "Top Gear" episodes glued together with studio bits, blatantly pointing out "This is some old stuff we threw together into episodes for you Americans". And I believe that is part of what caused it to fail.

No matter how hard any of us try, face it, we all know that "Gear" won't be the "Top Gear" we all know and love. They'll change things, they'll have different personalities, and it will surely lack that dry British humor we all enjoy so much.

As an American I say this: Just broadcast the BBC's "Top Gear" in the US, as is, and on the same day as it's aired on BBC. No special treatment is required, acknowledging Americans is not needed, except maybe the occasional one liner during the news, which they do with all new markets.

I'd much rather tune in to NBC and see Jeremy, Richard, and James, than have to deal with trying to accept a wannabe "Top Gear".

Now don't get me wrong, I will give the new show a shot, but I can't see it being anywhere near as good as the Original. In the end I foresee myself continuing to watch "Top Gear" but not "Gear".

You are all just a bunch of raving top gear fanboys. And thats not a good thing. A fan is someone who likes the show, a fanboy is a stupid raving lunatic who will defend it to the death and anything that isnt his beloved fixation is stupid and inferior. These are the kinds of people who post on this forum 50 times a day and have james may bedsheets.

I am looking forward to seeing an American version of top gear with cars and celebrities that i've actually heard of, i like the idea of jokes and challenges that are relevant to me, and am pleased to see the influence of the old top gear and the appointment of the closest thing we have to Jesus-emy clarkson at the helm. I'm a fan of top gear, but i'll be damned if i ever become such a fanboy that i cant appreciate a new version of it.

Its like if you had a favorite local restaurant, and you went there all your life, enjoyed the food, sat around and joked with the owners. Then they become so successful that they can afford to open up a new one across town cooking the same food from the same menu at the same prices, but you pan it because the food is cooked by a different chef. You're just a raving idiot lunatic, and if it wasn't for the internet's magical "give idiots like you an audience" trait, everyone would just ignore you and leave you in your parents basement clutching your bleach manga collection and richard hammond brand tooth whitening kit.

So if you want to go on worshiping all of the united kingdom over a public broadcasting automotive program to the point that you cant accept a local version, you are truely a sad, stupid human being, and i pity you.

OK I have listened to the bits of Adam Carolla that have been posted - I think a good choice has been made - they need people to stand up to him tho' like Hammond and May stand up to Clarkson IMHO.

That would be the worst combination ever.

Remember kids, just cuz they're famous doesn't mean they can be fit to capture TG's style.

hmmmm, maybe we (America) shouldn't be trying to perfectly emulate Top Gear. That would be boring and stupid because there is already a one and only Top Gear.

The Americans need to offer fresh and original content/format/style/stunts/etc., maybe with bits and pieces borrowed/inspired by Top Gear as appropriate. The Top Gear fanboys will, of course, bash it to death every week, but it seems futile if the Americans simply want to copy Top Gear and live up to its fame, which will never happen and will only solicit more ridicule and laughter from the fanboys.

The show that you're suggesting would filled with ford focus', chevy "malibu"'s, honda accords and civics, toyota corolla's, camry's and prius', minivans and SUV's, wow, what a crappy show... People don't want to see everyday cars, if they did, they'd watch Motortrend. People want to see something they don't see everyday, which is why Top Gear is popular in so many countries.

I mean yes, it is obvious that those cars would make appearances on Top Gear, but we all know that Top Gear wouldn't be anywhere near as successful as it is without the Zonda's, the Lambo's, the Ferrari's, the Konigsegg's and the like.

I've already stated that I'll give the show a chance, but I seriously don't believe creating a new show specifically for American audiences is the answer.

Like I've already said, I believe that the reason that Top Gear didn't catch on was because of the lame episodes they created for TDC, and I believe had they just broadcast the latest episode of Top Gear from BBC on TDC, it would have caught on. But instead what we got was this:

"Hello and Welcome to AMERICAN Top Gear"

**some old Top Gear clip from Last years season**

"And now over to British Top Gear"

**MAYBE something from this season of Top Gear**

"And now back to AMERICAN Top Gear"

And so on...

It was a pathetic attempt at selling Top Gear to US audiences, and I think that is the main reason it never took off. That and the fact that TDC never advertised that it was even on TDC. I discovered that it was on TDC by accident, and that was during the last episode that they had broadcast.

I think that if they had broadcast the actual Top Gear, and advertised it, it would have caught on. Not too mention it probably should have been on Speed Channel instead of TDC.

And you said "your argument is baseless in the real world of money and marketing." and I disagree. TDC failed to market Top Gear correctly, and that is my point. It is TDC's fault that we are not getting the real Top Gear, but a facsimile. Everyone I've shown Top Gear to has said "I wish this was on our TV". Had TDC done the marketing right, it would be.

UK Top Gear wouldn't succeed on network TV in primetime. No foreign show ever has or ever will.

And no, The Office, American Idol, etc. etc. don't count as foreign shows.

... I ask Herb Helbig, vehicle synthesis manager for SRT and a member of the original Team Viper development group since day one, if they'd ever thought of adding traction control. "It comes with two," he says, pointing at my feet. "Learn to use them." Got it.
