perhaps they know how widespread top gear is and rather than appear to be a re-hash of an already popular show (and likely be a sub=par rehash coz lets face it the chemistry between JC,RH,JM is hard to find and editing team is just in a league of its own) they'e trying to differentiate themselves and take their own spin on how a show like top gear is played out.
obviously they wanna ride on the sucess of TG to give the show some cred and get people to tune in, but once they are tuned in they'll show themselves to be different enough to be original and entertaining in their own way. they dont want to try and be top gear... that would be bad.
we dont need another Top Gear..... but we can sure as hell do with another good (related) alternative which hopefully Gear will turn out to be .... it should be, america loves its cars so the passion WILL be there, i just hope coporate sponsors dont influence the mix too much.
0Thanks for the input man, mad love.
I would hate it more than anything if they tried to imitate TG. It would be even worse than fifth gear...
Because it will only be half as good as Top Gear?
/runs
Exactly. They (hopefully) aren't trying to clone Top Gear, but instead come up with their own show which merely flavors Top Gear.
Because it's based on Top Gear and they wanted input to get it right I bet.
Think The Office UK vs. The Office US. Same premise, ended up being totally (well, relatively) different.
I blame Tim0r. Every time i see him post or on irc, it just fucks up my mood.
And how is that trolling? I was asking a serious question and by saying "watched neither" i meant that i watched neither of the 2 versions of the show, so i wouldn't know how to compare..
I wasn't referring to that particular post (hence "BTW"), just your overall posting habits lately. 95% of it seems to be troll-like, at least that's the impression I get and I don't think I'm alone...
I was surprised that it isn't being called TopGear aswell.
Brand recognition is an incredibly powerful thing, why wouldn't they want to take advantage of it?

That begs the question then of how many Americans watch Top Gear (either on BBC America or torrents)? It has a significant following on the Internet (FinalGear obviously), and I see clips show up on Gizmodo/Jalopnik occasionally (though that's not necessarily an American only audience). If they are going to call it Gear it tells me that "Top Gear" is not that recognized in the States.
Like it's been said before, they'd do well to emulate Top Gear instead of copy it. I'm sure an American version of Top Gear could work, but it needs its own style and the right personalities.

It would probably be downright confusing if they named it TG, how do you differentiate between TG and TG. And no one is going to call it Top Gear America either...

NBC is on channel 3 here, maybe they should've called it 3rd Gear. j/k
