I think the biggest factor in the Veyron not breaking the lap record is the Stigs inhibition to take someone else Million Dollar car to the limit.

Much of the Veryon's power that will push it from 150 to 250 mph is essentially useless on the TG test track since its too short and too tight in the corners, thus putting the much lighter CCX at a distinct advantage when it pitches around corners. I think the Keonigsegg can brake relatively later around corners because of this and the Veyron can't really go that much faster in the straights because it'll have to start braking and slowing down earlier. So effectively its usable power on a small track isnt that much greater than the CCX.

I was about to say that since the Veyron does accelerate faster (due to 4WD), it should in theory be faster round the track, but then I realized that the 4WD doesn't do much when you're already moving properly.

I can't remember where I heard this, but I think Rear-Wheel-Drive cars are faster than All-Wheel-Drive cars on a dry track. Probably something to do with controlled over-steer. Will this hurt the Bugatti?

AnGuRuSO, it could be that. It could also be that they generally are lighter and loose less power when only driving two wheels.

But those are really only valid if you're comparing cars that are otherwise identical.

RWD is faster around corners because the fronts are free to rotate at different revolutions. AWD cars force all wheels to rotate at the same speed, unless you can split the torque with a diff. But the AWD 16:4 would still be faster to 60 on dry or wet. Less wheel spin at launch and the Bugatti probably has bigger tires front and rear. Still, Nick Mason lent TP his F60 for a hot lap, and those are probably worth close to the Veyron's price tag by now.

RWD is faster around corners because the fronts are free to rotate at different revolutions

I thought it was because the torque going through the rear wheels generated more slip (both perpendicular and parallel to forward motion), thus helping the car turn.

AWD's tremendous grip simply causes understeer which slows the car down around a corner just like a FWD car....thus making RWD faster. Thats my understanding of it images/smilies/wink.gif

I just watched this episode yesterday and the James May/Veyron segment was a really great story. Well done to James for hitting 253mph!

I especially enjoyed his comments after he was done his run... he seemed genuinely speechless which isn't usually the case.

I was a bit surprised about James being speechless after the Veyron 400kmh run, since he wrote in the TG magazine this summer that it does not feel particulary fast... images/smilies/biggrin.gif but anyways, James's part was great. The rest was really good too, and I liked that a star in a reasonably priced car was somebody who I know images/smilies/smile.gif since I am not british..
I was looking forward to the new TT very much, but I was kind of confused, so is it any good or not?

Not as good as the Z4 Coupé, proven by Tiff and Jason Plato on 5th Gear images/smilies/wink.gifimages/smilies/mrgreen.gif

They should have the taken the Z4 instead of the RX-8, would have made much more sense.

hey ... does anyone have a link for the train crash .. and wat is this train crash ... who crashed and with what car??....

i thought the comment on the TT was not totally fair ... the TT looks really great in person and the Alfa does not give a feeling of being a chick magnet ... it wud probably suit a guy of 40 who is still not married and is out tos core on a lady of 47 ...

the Veyron is a masterpiece.. was kinda sad bugatti dint let it go arnd the track... Stig wud have loved it ..

I agree the Veyron bit was a thrill to watch. Good choice having the Pretentious Sunday driving James May to do the test drive. The Gallery was quite humorous and a bit different from the usual stuff. You can only smash and blow so many things up.

The Hugh Grant plug was a new low point. If that was the price to get him on then they should have passed on him. I disagree about the comments on the previous show. I really enjoyed the Jamie Oliver part.

When they were golfing, Jeremy called Richard's RX8 "chincey." Can anyone tell this American what that means? :-\

Pronounced "Chintzey" although since its a slang term you can spell it however you like really.

Argh explaining slang is so hard.....ummmm sort of flash for the wrong reasons. They styled it for the sake of styling it sort of thing.....
