In the 1930s New Orleans had a brutal hurricane...but the citizens didnt moan or complain; they rebuilt the city again. They know the risk of living there. That was before the welfare state was introduced in the 1960's, and look what 3 generations of welfare dependence has done. Look at how the city reacted; the mayor sat on his hands, and the governor just curled up into a ball and cried. Pathetic. You would never see that anywhere else in America.

So before the world says how bad it is in New Orleans, try learning about it first, and discover that our federal government did all they could. Obviously some of you are ignorant that in order for the government to help, the state has to ask first. The fact that a huge entity was able to mobilize in 4 days is nothing short of amazing.

How about the evacuees of Katrina, quite a few of them who abused the handouts we as Americans gave? And you wonder why we "turn our backs" on New Orleans? We as a whole country, turned our porch lights on for them, set an extra place at the dinner table...what did many do? They were rude, took our money, and bitched about everything. Ask some of the volunteers who helped out in Houston. They will tell you the real story of the shithole that is New Orleans.

Now, we Americans are a very generous people. We will bend over backwards to help ANYONE out. But when the people whom we help, dont say thanks...well, how would YOU react?

Now, keep in mind the vast majority of the citizens of New Orleans are fine, upstanding, law abiding people. But as always, the worst are always the ones in focus. So in conclusion, before you point fingers and say that it is oh so horrible in New Orleans, do some research first. For anyone who is in favor of socialism, New Orleans is your shining beacon.

Very well written post, and I hope the English fan's will apply it to their awful opinions of the US. You have heard of the term unemployable, well there also exist people who are unhelpable.

And about Alabama, yeah, there's some fuckin rednecks and yeah they're weird as hell. What about the people in your own country though? I'd be willing to bet that a similar percentage of your own population wouldn't be the representation of your country you'd want us to see. What about "Chavs" (I hope I have that term right). The TG team went out of their way to find the worst example of people that most US citizens don't even consider our brethren. The redneck south is the blunt of many a joke in our own country, the problem is that many of you seem to be assuming that is the entire US.

I still can't wait to see this episode though.

if you want a beater, go to america. i dont think id wanna cruise in a euro beater, no way. the banged up american cars seem to pull it off with good grace and ease and comfort.

if i move to america... i want a beater as my daily driver, and something more upmarket for weekends.

its care free motoring, you can bash it, and leave it unlocked at it wont matter, it'll be comfortable, chew fuel, and rattle like a bitch but you just wont care when your cruising down the interstate with your windows down in a $800 car with no air con.

pretty good that they made the 800mile trip, shows that the americans built one part right, the most important part.....the engine.

and jayhawk nice insight, no one in the UK can really comment on new orleans because, well, we dont live there and its not in our news.

i hope tony blaire and his gash labour party have a good look at it, becuase they pedal socialism like theres no tomorrow. thankfully we are free from such forces of nature, tho for how long who knows.

and yeah, i am a frequent visitor to a very american sided forum on the net so i heard alot of stories about people in new orleans taking their donated money and instead of using it to survive they bought widescreen TV's and guns.

the few always spoil it, always. if i gave some one $2000 to help them out of a tight spot, i wouldnt be thinking bout helping them again if they imediately blow that money on somethin rediculous like a TV or drugs.

if i said what i really wanted to say about where i live and the people in it....i'd be in the gutter bleeding before i could finish my speech. though i am smart enough to keep my trap shut so i dont end up there.

i dont think its even in human nature to ignore it and turn a blind eye...if you dont like something, you wanna make it go away.

ok free speech does kinda exist....to a point, as long as the people your with have either a) similar views b) civilised enough to respect your view.

saddly there are plenty of people here who arent civilised enough to even respect your presence let alone what you say.

so for me, free speech exists in a round - a - bout way, but absolute free speech (where i can say what i damn like without re-percussion) does not exist

It looks like I am the only Brit who was a little uncomfortable with the level of anti-Americanism in the episode. A few jokes at the expense of any other nation is humorous, but this was way over the top. This was pure hatred.

Top Gear seemed to start from a position of wanting to find the most unflattering view of America possible. They succeeded. This will genuinely hurt the US tourist industry.

Everyone seems to be outraged that the 'Red-necks' reacted the way they did. What about 'Freedom of Speech' everybody cries. How about Brits try to drive through Brixton in a car draped with BNP flags and banners. This is exactly the same 'red rag to a bull' situation. Freedom of speech has limits.

IceBone: You obviously do not comprehend how America works. Or rather, how it should work. The government should be, and to some degree still is, dependent on its citizens. Obviously you live in a culture of socialism, which, if you and the majority of the citizens of Slovakia are fine with it, then great! But I am not going to be idle in my thoughts and opinions when I see my America start to turn into a country of people dependent of its government for all their needs. That type of socialism is outdated and insulting to my fellow citizens.

I am not an English major, just a regular person who has access to the internet, a person of strong opinions, beliefs and ideals. If the both of you are nitpicking over trivial things like grammar, then it means you do not have an argument to counteract my own.

put it this way, i can get stabbed on a night out for simply lookin at some one the wrong way, or telling some chavs to get lost after they ask me for 20p "for the bus home"

if i start saying things that go against them ..... well

i can say what i like within my group of friends, they usually have the same view anyway. but if there was say a chav or a benfit sponging immigrant in the group then id be met with some physical resistance for sure.

it is a rough area around here though, alot tend to speak with actions rather than words.

My points exactly. Like a previous poster said, we have more redneck jokes than could possibly be counted. In fact we have several comedians that have made a living of making fun of the south (where they are from). My issue is that it seems this view of the US is being taken as the rule rather than the exception. I love TG, and I think I'll even like the episode, I just hate when some viewers take it as 100% reality when it clearly isn't.
