That was superb. God knows what the rest of you are smoking.... images/smilies/wink.gif

Whether or not it was more epic/funny/contrived/whatever than the US and Arctic specials is irreverent. It was hugely entertaining and beautifully, beautifully shot. It really did deserve to filmed in HD.

This one felt much more about the cars, especially Hammond and Oliver (nice of him to name the Opel after my dog). What a champ of a car. And Jeremy and the Lancha - I mean could he have picked a worse car for the task?! Brilliant!

It was more subtle but I laughed and at some points (ie. Oliver drowning) cried right the way through. Nice work.

Pure gold !!
I'm pretty sure that had nothing to do with the show, the car was available in both 5-speed and 4-speed transmissions and his had the knob off a 5-speed.

Clarkson's dislike of the Beetle is pretty well known, and for a number of fairly good reasons: it was a cheap car, the standard engine was less powerful than the average, and it wasn't particularly roomy compared with the Golf.

Also, the TG crew (in comparison with Fifth Gear) generally tend to avoid "people's cars," mainly because they're made to the lowest common denominator and therefore don't really have all that much that can be acknowledged or heightened in a report. Hence the Beetle's stigma.

I just wish that I either (a) had the money and time to do this sort of thing all the time, or (b) had their jobs!!
Imagine the stories they'll be able to tell their grandchildren!
Wicked stuff, slightly reminded me of the Artic special, but that in no way is a bad thing!

BTW, to all the folks back home, hope you had a nice Bonfire Night on the 5th!

I'm going to buy me one of these Beetles if it's the last thing I ever do.

I'm sure it would just have been the one. How it was transported about, though, is what we don't know. Did it, for instance, have to do that mad cross-country dash to a petrol station?

Making Oliver the obvious (proven) winner. *Nods* images/smilies/smile.gif

I absolutely loved this episode. Perhaps a bit cliché, but expecially Oliver. I must explain that my grand-mother has a 1980 something kadett. It is a really great car!
When I was watching I kept thinking about a dutch song, wich is about a opel kadett, it's a fantastic song, wich when you listen to it, makes you understand what hammond was feeling in his opel.

Futher more it was a road movie like no other, It gave me a feel of friendship. For ones there weren't really getting each other killed (like in america) altough the meat in james merc was really funny! It just was fun to watch and I absolutely loved it.

How empty is your life, if your discussing this.
Does it really matter what she said?

"Fluffy little clouds" are part of the song lyrics. images/smilies/smile.gif

And my life is not remotely empty, thank you.

I have a strong suspicion that the beetle made it through the journey quite alright. Its rear engined so it has excellent traction. The flat 4 is air cooled so you never have to worry about cooling, makes the same power as the opel too. They are super light, and are actually naturally buoyant (for a certain amount of time) Beetles are just rugged and dependable, and I was into them hugely for a time. I would have picked a beetle from the start!

Yes, I'm pretty sure it was a Beetle that Peter Duncan tried to drive across the Irish Sea in, back in the eighties. They said then that it was ideally suited.

Oliver still won, though. images/smilies/tongue.gif
