Right with you on that one - a Jaaaaaaaaaaaag is a car for someone like Terry-Thomas. Put him in racing overalls and you get... Graham Hill. If he was still alive today he'd have an XFR, and for that reason alone anyone who is thinking of buying an M5 should march right out of the BMW showroom immediately.

But what was best for me was that when the show started, the opening seemed much more relaxed and genuine, and it just felt like the magic that has been a bit absent was back - and that tone carried on for the rest of the show. I know Jeremy remarked in his Times column this weekend about the way the fansites critique the show, but I wonder whether it was on his mind because some of what people said hit home in some way - the energy around the show was completely different from the rest of the series so far and it was much better for it. Yay for tearing up the script and starting again
He had a similar rant at the end of For Crying Out Loud! - which I've just finished reading. Those of you who have the book (or Jezza's column on 28th October 2007 where it originally appeared), then take a look there for the full monty. Meanwhile, for the rest of you...

wow, they really don't like us. i was reading other remarks and they really rip into Hammond because of his love for Oliver and how any car that wins their challenges is immediately set on fire and the losers are put on display.
i don't think they seem to realise that the more venom they spit out about Top Gear and by definition 'us' they are just adding more fuel to the fire and keep Top Gear making wisecracks about them. Its almost like saying there is 3 billion people in the world and if any one of those people doesn't like me, then they're just wrong in the head.
They really should just grow a pair, move on and take it on the chin.

M5 > XFR

I've given up on analysing TG episodes since what I say doesn't matter for shit. :p

Looking forward to the XJ review in the next series already.

Does anyone remember the M5 review Jeremy did a couple of years back? I have watched it several times since, and I think it's absolutely one of the best they've done on Top Gear.

The XFR bit wasn't, however. Visually it was stunning, and their experiment with blurring some of the footage was good I think. But why have Top Gear confined themselves to almost ONLY doing the reviews at the track?
Jeremy himself pointed out that both the XFR and the M5 have two sides - practicality and sportyness. So what the hell was that review all about? It was the typical "Is car A better than B? Well lets find out by having a dragrace/having a race that makes no sense around the track/seeing how much cheese we can fit into the back of each car/drive around with a dog" and it was absolute nonsense.
No, I'm not looking for a review that tells me whether I should buy the XFR or the M5, but I would still like an honest and sober opinion on how the car is.

The greenhouse bit. What the fuck? They made some sort of weird connection between that bit and the XFR bit that I would have thought only a politician could make. It wasn't that it was bad, it was just totally out of place.

The cheap car challenge was entertaining, as always. The first part was by far the best though, the second was meh.

8, for being funny through the first twenty minutes. I would have loved to see another actual review in there though.

Exactly! I was typing a comment on the XFR after the show, I stopped and tought, wait... this isn't right... XFR? I thought I was wrong and accidently typed the name of the car in LFS, but then I realised Jag STOLE that name from LFS! Still an awesome car though

By the first 45min was shaping up to be a "perfect" episode, but from 50min onwards they've lost it.
The ice racing segment was relevant to the RWD theme, but it took up a lot of time and, let's be honest, it was boring. No major action (apart from the failed piano delivery, obviously) going with no scoreboard in the end (what for do they score points anyway then?) simply wasted 10mins of my time.

8/10

I was disappointed with this episode. All I wanted were some nice shots of old coupes going sideways, and there were hardly any.. I mean they had an ice track FFS!

8. First episode of the series I have really enjoyed. James May was funny, the first bit of the race made me laugh out loud for a bit.

I think this is the best of the season so far. That was a proper cheap car challenge. I even liked Sienna Miller. Great ep.
