Bloody Omaha

More than 60 years ago, the fate of the Second World War turned on five Normandy beaches. 'D-Day' was the greatest amphibious invasion ever attempted and is remembered as a great victory. But on Omaha Beach, it was very nearly a disaster.

History records that within hours, 2,000 men were cut down. But now, new research has found that, in reality, the casualty figures were more than double that.

The story of D-Day has been re-told in dramas such as Saving Private Ryan. But what really happened on Omaha Beach in June 1944? What was it like for the men who had to fight their way ashore there? And how did they manage to win when so much seemed to go so wrong?

The re-emergence of an entire German battery, hidden under the Normandy soil for over 60 years; the discovery of a captured German map; and the latest historical research all reveal a startling turning point to the story of 'Bloody Omaha'.

Presented by Richard Hammond.

Unlike some countries, we like to remember that there were more than just our own troops involved in the retaking of France images/smilies/tongue.gif

I read somewhere that there were troops from something like 11 allied nations involved in one way or another.

Fact: 2 x US beaches, 2 x British Beaches & 1 x Canadian.

On OMAHA beach there was a cockup with the DD tanks that were launched too far out and the wind and tide conditions plus the course that the tank crews were told to steer meant that only one Tank got there - no tank support = massacre on the beach.

The Documentary may have more/updated information in it.

Don't understand Omaha, why a British program focus on that rather than Juno and Sword?

It all went pearshaped on OMAHA, so it is more interesting, the other beaches were comparatively well planned and executed.

The situation was rescued by the determination, bravery and skill of the troops on the beach - I beleive that one US Destroyer 'disobeyed' orders and came right in shore and was instramental in saving many lives and gaining victory, providing excellent and accurate support fire.

EDIT/ USS Frankford

The Wiki is pretty good and corrects me on a number of points of detail.

Bloody Omaha is called bloody for a reason. THOUSANDS of lives were lost in a matter of hours, it wasn't just the tanks that couldn't make it. The germans were supposed to have been much weaker but instead they were there in full force. I suggest you watch this if you really don't know the difference between ohama and any other landing beach.

I wouldn't call Hamster useless at docs. I mean I thought the Evil doc/entertainment show was brilliant.
But to be honest WWII should be left to mr. Clarkson and if Richard really does want to make a historic films he should stick to the middle ages (eg. the Holy Grail and the Gunpowder plot).

This thread has Rapidshare and torrent links. I believe it's also in 95's FTP.

Hey I was getting there. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I forgot to look yesterday because I was trying to get all of my top gear and other british program files organized so I can back all of them up. Then when I posted that it was 1:30 in the morning. I'm not really a lazy bastard I swear. images/smilies/sad.gif

Thankyou for the link though I appreciate it.
