Rep Power: 58 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | I read somewhere that there were troops from something like 11 allied nations involved in one way or another. Fact: 2 x US beaches, 2 x British Beaches & 1 x Canadian. On OMAHA beach there was a cockup with the DD tanks that were launched too far out and the wind and tide conditions plus the course that the tank crews were told to steer meant that only one Tank got there - no tank support = massacre on the beach. The Documentary may have more/updated information in it. |

| Don't understand Omaha, why a British program focus on that rather than Juno and Sword? | |

Rep Power: 58 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | It all went pearshaped on OMAHA, so it is more interesting, the other beaches were comparatively well planned and executed. The situation was rescued by the determination, bravery and skill of the troops on the beach - I beleive that one US Destroyer 'disobeyed' orders and came right in shore and was instramental in saving many lives and gaining victory, providing excellent and accurate support fire. EDIT/ USS Frankford The Wiki is pretty good and corrects me on a number of points of detail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omaha_Beach Last edited by Cobol74; January 2nd, 2008 at 06:42 PM.. |

Rep Power: 5 ![]() | Bloody Omaha is called bloody for a reason. THOUSANDS of lives were lost in a matter of hours, it wasn't just the tanks that couldn't make it. The germans were supposed to have been much weaker but instead they were there in full force. I suggest you watch this if you really don't know the difference between ohama and any other landing beach. |

But to be honest WWII should be left to mr. Clarkson and if Richard really does want to make a historic films he should stick to the middle ages (eg. the Holy Grail and the Gunpowder plot). | |
