My bet is either/or Volvo V70 update, or possibly a Senator, a Policeman friend of mine at the time rated the Police version of the Vauxhall Senator as the best Police car ever used in the UK. Oh and of course the last possibility would be the 3.0 ltr Ford Granada a la The Sweeney.

What they could do is another competition, where every one of them buys a crap car and turns it into a cop car, and then they compete in a series of challenges. The challenges might include a lap of track against the standart cop Astra Diesel, some sort of pursuit stuff like they did with the vans and the limos and all the sorts of things
 The cars should be typical for them, Jezza with some fast POWER car, James with something classic and Richard with something weird. And then Jezza would argue the whole time why the others have taken the wrong cars...

I was just thinking of the film "Hot Fuzz", where at the end, the Sandford Police upgrades their police cars from Vauxhall Astra diesels to Subaru Impreza Turbos, and was hoping that the show could get their hands on a Impreza Turbo.
Or whatever happened to Jeremy's Rover 3500? Put the rear doors back on and that might make a *great* "jam sandwich".

Chief Suspects in Cheap Cop Cars Challenge
Magazine preview shows a green Fiat Coupe (Clarkson?) a Champagne Gold Lexus LS400 (May?) and a White Suzuki Vitara (HAS to be Hammond's, surely?). I have always assumed that the cars in most of these challenges are purchased for them by the researchers. The White Van Challenge was the main reason for this thought as the choices kind of reflected their personalities a bit too well: Clarkson the default Transit, May the slow, ponderous and badly built Sherpa POS, and Hammond the small feisty Bedford Rascal which he then rolled. If these are indeed the cars they use, and I am right in my guess as to who has what I'll be even more convinced, although this is of course very much my own personal view and I could be utterly wrong!!
There is also a pic of a silver 5 Series BMW being chased by a Police Volvo V70, but I am guessing this is their benchmark and the Beemer is the getaway car they have to try to catch. Looks like the three of them will be up on charges of ABR*. *ABR - Ambitious But Rubbish
