Which is probably also true for the salt flats Jeremy and crew drove over.

Oh lordy lordy I hope he didn't damage this:

http://www.erlebe-suedafrika.de/images/Makgadikgadi-Salzpfannen.JPG

And it seems others have been doing this well before TG decided to show up (there's a surprise)
http://www.pangaea-expeditions.com/images/productimages/adventuremedical/DefendersMakgadikgadi350.jpg

Doing a quick search you'll see all sorts of pictures of people driving ATV's and screwing about out there. I'm sure the government will probably allow salt mining around there when pressured to by some company anyway.

Well, if 10 bankers decide to go in the middle of nowhere & drive around a huge field in offroaders, just to get away from their 50 or less IQ wives, it's ok. If a 47 year old TV motoring presenter does it, it's worth creating some sort of stupid enviromental buzz.

This is good news. The liberal media makes people think everybody is an eco-pest. But backlash like this really help to bring the silent majority to the surface.

Personally, I would love to see a duel between clarkson and gore

I think enviromental issues do exist, and I think mankind really has made an impact on global warming but c'mon... it's salt... miles of it, nothing can live there. They didn't go to the amazon and cut down 2miles of trees to have a drag race. Seriously. I agree with you guys, this is just sad. I point my finger at these hippies and laugh.

this news featured in Hong Kong news channel and according to my news channel, BBC did consult environmentalists for filming on the salt falts, so they know where they can and cannot race/film, so they did take preparations.

i bet the environmentalists just complained and ignore the fact that BBC do care about environment

Excerpt from today's MediaGuardian:

Not every guide in Botswana was worried about Top Gear's visit, however. Peter Perlstein, who runs a local helicopter company and helped with filming on one day, said the pans were already a popular 'self-drive destination' and 70-80 vehicles might visit in a weekend: 'Hundreds of tourists drive all over the plain on a regular basis, so I can't see how their vehicles could have made a difference,' he said.

Funny that: "70-80 vehicles might visit in a weekend" yet they single-out the one driven by Jeremy. Typical journalism - exclude the bits that ruin the story.

well, it's been at least a week since the last eco-maniac had a go at Top Gear! Saying that it's probably one of Top Gear's own spin doctors that has leaked out the info, to get the fans riled up and ready for the summer special in 2 weeks time. I wouldn't put it past them. Andy Wilman has a very clever head on his shoulders! He knows Jezza can take the flack, and all it does is a) boost ratings and b) boosts Jezza's share price on celebdaq!
(For those of you not in the know here is the link- it would take too long to explain)

Wow, I thought this was actually going to be earth-shattering news.

This is a letter on the TV letters' page on BBC's Ceefax (it was also on the ITV1 letters page - she's got a busy life, eh?)

Why did Top Gear have to damage salt pans in Botswana? What was the point in driving on them? When will these thugs be off our screens?

Kim, St. Albans

Question 1: because they are there.
Question 2: mainly to annoy lentil-eating lesbians like you, Kim.
Question 3: When hell (or the Botswanan salt pans) freeze over.

I'll bet the dopey cow doesn't even know where Botswana is.
