This may shed some light:

The Norfolk auction seems to be related:

Quote:
Mr Pateman said he understood the three Top Gear hosts were going to drive their auction-bought cars to Spain to take part in a classic car rally.

So with this, and the ice thing, that's already two instances of the whole gang taking part in shootouts? This season will be fun

From "Essential Mallorca" :- Jeremy Clarkson will be driving a 1979 Austin Healy Sprite, James May a Citroen Ami 8 and Richard Hammond an Austin Fx4.

I thought in the auction thread it said that Richard had been outbid on the Austin? Can't wait till tomorrow (18th) to see how they get on at the start.

I've gone through a number of Flickr photos and Youtube clips from the opening night, and they're nowhere to be seen. You see car number 34, and then there's no sign of numbers 35, 36 and 37. Also, their "score" from the first day suggests they didn't start. Either that or they're doing really poorly, and have been given the worst possible penalty lol. And I'm wasting far too much time with this lol.

Please don't give up researching- I'm relying on you for updates! It would be really disappointing if they're not taking part.

Well at least they're there. It's either they are competing but not competing or they didn't compete on the first day.

This report says that they are in Mallorca and that they will be taking part of the rally:

Quote:
The three presenters in this space, Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May will participate in the rally while his team, filmed the competition during the day Friday and Saturday morning in the circuit of Llucmajor.
Apologies for the grammar errors. It went through google language.

edit: this came in from the rally site (via Google Language)

Quote:
The members of the motor program in the world, TOP GEAR, are participating in the workshop today at the V Rally Clásico Isla Mallorca with his production team. They took out his three presenters at the controls of three cars in the class regularly. You can see the results of the disputed portions during the day Thursday.

This link leads to an overview of all the results. You can find the guys in the Regularidad pdf's. Can't really make out what is what and why, but it does seem that Richard is trailing. Oh dear. He won't like being slower than James. And a probably very ignorant question, but does anyone know who Welch, Verger and Wheeler are?

Much the same for me but I think regulalrity competiton is not about out and out speed but how close you are to the set times for each stage, with penalties for too ealry / too late.

Loads of pictures of the guys in action. Note how it says that they took Spanish interpreters in their passenger seats as they set off. I might be very sexist, but somehow the girl next to James doesn't look like a Spanish interpreter to me. images/smilies/wink.gif

In Hamsters case its "That's not gone well" images/smilies/cry.gif

I'm actually surprized. Classic car rallies are all about steady driving and good planning, so seeing Clarkson of all people way ahead of the other two is, well, quite unexpected. Who woulda thunk it - I would have placed a bet on James being quite good at that.

But on the other hand I remember an article in Jeremies column for the Times, written by his wife Francie, in which she writes about taking part in such a classics rallye, and not for the first time either, so Jeremy might have had some previsoud insight into this form of competition.

I don't take all the result very much seriously though as with the three of them they most likely only used the whole thing as an excuse to cock about images/smilies/lol.gif

If it's any consolation for Hammond, he was driving a Lancaster and from the looks of the photos so far, it's very classic but probably slow.

Look for them here. James is quite easy to spot images/smilies/lol.gif and he comes up a few times. I spotted Jeremy once, and there's a quick shot of Richard at 4:08 (going out of shot).

James' Citroen looks hilarious going around the track with all that stuff on the roof. Well, that car on a track was always going to be fun to watch.
