"The production team laid down the gauntlet, asking them to modify an existing car so it could lap the track as fast as a very specific - and very brisk - benchmark on the current power board."

Looking at the current Power Lap board, I think the producers would be daft to tell them to match a supercar speed. The fastest non-supercar listed would appear to be the Mitsubishi Evo 8 (400), at 1:24.8.

As to the actual car to be modified, an old Renault Espace might catch them by surprise, except Hammond's already raced one. However, if it were a first-generation Dodge Caravan / Plymouth Voyager, they would be *extremely* horrified, given their penchant for dissing American cars.

Could well be a heavily modded zafira vxr, dontcha think? I mean, the thing's already pretty fast. For a van.

It looks too small to be an espace. Besides, they've already worked with Espaces before and looked what happened to that one.

I think they worked with them twice. The Convertible, and the Train Crash. Third time might be the charm.

Haha that would be very cool if it were a Jazz, but I think it's not *quite* the right shape. It could be a similar hatchback though.

I still think it's a Jazz, looking at the front headlight which seem to stick out a bit like the Jazz's.

not sure if its the right shape, but if they wanted to make a serious attempt at it, isn't there a Mitsubishi people carrier from the early 90's that has the turbocharged engine and drivetrain (maybe 4wd) from an early model Evo? think it was called the RVR? don't know if it was sold in europe though. all it would take is a high boost turbo and a few bolt on mods to be looking at a lot of horse power... then all they have to do is stop Hammond from giving it the ol 'Scandinavian flick' like the last people carrier challenge images/smilies/smile.gif

Not a Caravan, too aerodynamic. For some reason I want to say a GM dustbuster, like a Pontiac Transsexual or whatever it was called over there, but it's probably a bit small for that. So my best guess...Renault Scenic?

Not to dash your hopes and dreams, but it's totally not one of those. Now, knowing TG, whatever that is might get into a big accident and wind up looking like an Aztek, but it's not starting out as one.
