Some more clues about the Japan trip in James's new column. He has driven the Nissan GTR, but rather likes the Mazda Blot.

I know its been mentioned multiple times, but while the GTR vs bullet train race is a good idea for the new challenge, that car needs to be derestricted from the factory 180 kph limiter.
You suggesting they should do more than 80kph over legal highway speeds?
Actually 100kph, speed limits are 80 on the highways here.
Oh, I think I just got what you were getting at. Man, I'm slow.
Bullet train confirmed (with Clarkson in the car, of course):
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/p...es/7422017.stmClarkson also revealed he had raced a bullet train in Japan for the new series of Top Gear.
I have a recurring dream in which Jeremy is on fire and I have a fire extinguisher but can’t get the pin out. Awesome. I love the races. I just hope they keep it real and don't script it to death, the way things have been going.

So it's looking like it's going to be the Nissan GT-R versus a bullet train. Sweet!![]()
Bullet train vs GTR?!
cant wait!! i hope its true
Great article by James there! Gosh I'm anxious now to see what their visit to Japan was like! It's such a wonderful country and he's absolutely spot on about what it's like!

It would make sense for them to use a GTR, but I'd laugh hard (and at the same time be immensely disappointed) if they use a Cube.
http://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/view...-drop-a-gear-/The motoring motormouth also revealed that during recent filming for his BBC2 show he was frustrated when his car would not exceed 112mph.
...
The speed freak tried to beat the record-breaking train, which has a top speed of 220mph.
Clarkson said: “It’s really irritating. You can push your boot through the carpet and it won’t do more than 112.”
Is that the GT-R's limited top speed? And could this be Jezza's first loss?![]()

I agree with that. I mean we always expects Jeremy to be in a super car going "POWER". I mean think about how funny it could be if it was Jeremy in a Nissan Cube or another of those small only in Japan cars. Heck stuff him in a Peel again and make him race something equally ridiculous like Hammond in a Sled pulled by cats.
I read somewhere that the Nissan GT-R is limited to 111mph on the road (via a satellite system) in Japan, and will reach a Maximum speed of 155mph on a Track (apparently they've mapped the tracks, because the system knows when you are on one...)
In the same article it mentioned that the North American GT-R will not have the satellite controlled speed restrictions, but it will be limited to do 155mph. What a disappointment... Just like the BMW M5... Capable of over 200mph, but restricted to 155mph...
Why do they even bother making it so fast, when they just restrict it's top speed in the end? I'll never understand that.
does anyone know the exact dates that TG were in Japan?

to quote chong in one of the cheech and chong movies (the one in amsterdam): "because". well there's this one county where there's still a bit of the motoring oblivion left. the type where you can legally go flat out without limits. if that oblivion is gone some day, i'm too.
anyway, why do they do it? nobody knows. with most german car manufacturers it's an agreement they all signed off on, so they release those cars with electronic 'locks' that can be circumvented easily later on. so in that way they keep to the agreement, while at the same time not.
i love the way the satellite system appears to be working for the japanese. lock to a 180 kph (112mph) via sat is a funny concept that just begs to be circumvented somehow...
I think he was being generic, as if to say, 'small Japanese car'
