Default Top Gear in Space?

Just saw this on Autoblog...

Quote:
They've launched an original MINI off a giant snow-covered ski jump, nearly sent a Reliant Robin into orbit and now, the Top Gear crew may toy with space exploration again, except this time, they'll strap themselves inside before pulling the trigger. According to Will Whitehorn, president of Virgin Galactic, the BBC approached his company looking to launch Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond into space for a future Top Gear episode. Virgin hopes to send its first commercial flight into space before the end of next year.

You might think that stunts like this may fall by the wayside in the wake of the global financial crisis, but you'd apparently be wrong. According to Hammond, "Because of the hard times everyone is facing, we need to go ridiculous on Top Gear. We need faster cars and bigger stunts. Nobody can afford to go out and buy a car, so there is no real point in us reviewing them. We might as well concentrate on escapism and fantasy." We can hardly think of a bigger stunt, so it sounds like a perfect fit.

I'll believe it when I see it, but that would be interesting (and expensive for the BBC).

How would that relate to cars though? Would they review Virgin space travel against a reliant robin spaceship? images/smilies/rolleyes.gif

I'm sure the BBC has like $30 million laying around to do this.

... I ask Herb Helbig, vehicle synthesis manager for SRT and a member of the original Team Viper development group since day one, if they'd ever thought of adding traction control. "It comes with two," he says, pointing at my feet. "Learn to use them." Got it.

^ According to the Virgin Galactic web site, the price of tickets starts at around $200,000 per person and the craft takes 6 passengers, so it may not cost the BBC much more than $1 million to send them to 360,000 feet.

One stumbling block I can see though, is that the Space craft uses a HYBRID rocket engine .... I wonder if Clarkson would really want to travel in a Space Prius? images/smilies/lol.gif

Also, what's an hour long commercial on the BBC worth to Virgin? images/smilies/wink.gif

I wonder if it has anything to do with the third sentence in this article: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/money/art...ages-town.html

Jonathan Ross "had a bit about how TV is going to space something like "Top gear is going to do it." And then made a crack about how Hammond wont because of his history with rockets =P

Shows what an idiot Ross is. Doesn't know the dfference between rocket and jet propulsion. Not surprising seeing as he drives a Pious. Floppy-haired twat should stick to phone-pesting aging celebs and trying to sound like he knows something about film. Time the Beeb fired him off and gave his exhorbitant salary to Top Gear to boost their budget. After all I'm pretty sure TG gets more viewers in the UK never mind globally.

I'm not having the best of days btw - does it show?

I'd like to see an epic race with Hammond in the TARDIS (in full Tenth Doctor costume), Captain James T Slow of the Starship Enterprise, and Jeremy McFly in the De Lorean.

With a guest appearance by Boris Johnson as Doc Brown?

Actually on reflection Jezza in the Tardis - hehas similar hair to Tom Baker when he was the Doctor and is tall enough to carry off the long coat/scarf/hat combo (with Sabine as Sarah Jane Schmitz?), and Richard as Marty McFly 'cos he's about the right size and build. Captain James T Slow has a good ring to it 'though. Could even get a cameo from Wilman as Bones maybe?

I know Clarkson, Hammond and May are well-known for mostly challanges that are "ambitious, but rubbish" but this may be too ambitious (and quite dangerous) even for them.
