Default [11x01] Ratings

Here are the first set of audience figures for Top Gear series 11.

The headline figure is that Top Gear was watched by an average of 6.2 million people with an incredible 24.4% reach.

That puts it in second place for its timeslot and considering it was up against the EUFA CUP and the Royal - it's a brilliant performance.

TG started off with 5.5 million viewers at 8pm but that grew to 6.9 by 9pm - dropping back to 2.7 million as soon as the next programme started (Kinky Boots).

The top programme in the timeslot was the football with 7.2 million and a 29.7% share followed by Top Gear and then The Royal (5.1 million).

Top Gear was the most watched programme on BBC Two followed by Kinky Boots (2.7 million) and Coast (2.2 million).

As well as being the second most watched programme on BBC TWO it was also the second most watched programme of the whole night.

And for extra info - The Sunday Night Project (hosted by tonights SIARPC) got 1.2 million with a 6% share which is pretty good for Channel 4 (second most watch show on Channel 4 beaten by Big Brother (2.2 million).

You can see background info on what this means in the grand scheme of 11 series of Top Gear on my TG Ratings guide.

Oh and here are the top rated shows on the iPlayer right now.

1) Top Gear
2) Doctor Who
3) Bill Gates: How a Geek changed the world
4) Page Three Teens
5) EUFA Euro 2008

So Top Gear has been Doctor Who, Bill Gates, Topless teenage girls and the football images/smilies/smile.gif (yes I know the others have been there longer - but still!)

I'm just amazed that Bill Gates is more popular than Page Three Teens.

Maybe because it's via the web? Wait...

Thanks for posting the ratings info. Anybody know the BBC American numbers? We tend to get the same three episodes over and over. Eventually I expect Jeremy to get fewer eggs cracked over his head...

my first post here.
good episode, very nice to have them back. the guests were crap - one ot the most unfanny and uninteresting ones, one was crazy or sth...

overall Top Gear is keeping the quality I expect from them.

Watched the episode at lunch. Great to have new content then. I liked the "stuntman" segment, but, as usual, the big film of the police cars was wheeze-inducing. The guests were a bit off, but news was hilarious so that carried through to the other side of the Star(s) in a Reasonaly-Priced Car, and the super car fuel test...

Default Recorded laughter played in studio background?

Hi all,

Just had to register and post this question here to rid or confirm my paranoia images/smilies/wacko.gif

I've been a keen follower of Top Gear but this new part really got on my nerves as for the first time I felt I was watching a sitcom. There is recorded laughter played in the studio background?! I'm sure I would have noticed this before in the previous series... but this one really stuck out. The jokes weren't that good and people were hardly smiling from time-to-time but an exactly same laughter was present during the whole time.. can't say the same about applauds but just the laughter.

Anyone?

Loved it actually. But the first episode in each series usually is a standout.
Anyone catch what was actually displayed on the screens ( in the studio) when JC announces to everyone what he ‘found on the internet’ , before it went to the shot of the pickup truck that left the road?
( The camera pans back not giving us people at home a look at it – as the audience on set breaks out in laughter).
On the ‘Police car’ segment, would any one know why James went for the Lexus? (Apart from Jame’s being James). It’s comfy & brown on the inside, but nothing else really jumps out about it.
I actually liked the exposed, brutish welds on the Ferarri Scuderia. Very ‘handmade’ feel to it.

(PS: I my first post. And I just like to add that I think a Aust version of Top Gear is doomed to failure. We Australians aren’t very good at making something the same way other people would go about doing things. We’ll all cringe like we do, it’ll last 5 episodes and it’ll get put away between the late night French soft porn flims & test pattern on (Aust )SBS.)
