Those are some good figures, but is that the peak of what the ratings will be I wonder? Last night's episode was really good, so maybe with word of mouth people will watch the repeats.

I would say the coverage of Richards accident has drawn alot more new viewers since the start of the season than any change to the format has. TG has been like it is now (more cocking about/less car reviews) since the start of season 8.

I'd say Richards crash, the ensuing media coverage and the first episode back prompted a lot of new viewers for 9x01. A lot of them probably saw the show for the first time and didn't mind it, so they decide to tune in every week now.

I wouldn't say it's simply the recent format of the show that's drawing the higher ratings.

That would be true if the ratings had dropped after episode one and stayed low but they picked up again after episode three - picking more viewers up mid-series would suggest people are coming into the show because of word of mouth about the stunts.

If it were purely press from the accident the numbers would have stayed constant from start to finish.
