From what I've read, Renault or Peugeot or Citreon or one of those French companies didn't take too kindly to one of JC's reviews. I think to the point where the BBC actually issued an apology for it. JC left the show afterwards and it became about as innocuous as 5th Gear is right now.
I think you're mixing stuff up... I recall having seen a Top Gear episode where they retraced it's history. They said that the "car thrashing" trend started with a Land Rover with a diesel engine that was pure crap, you had to climb a more or less steep hill in 1st gear, as soon as you passed 2nd you totally lost power! Anyway, I remember JC himself saying that the "car thrashing" trend kindof went overboard and once he totally thrashed a Peugeot 306 on the show. Then he went back home in it and realized that it wasn't a bad car after all. He felt very "unprofessional" and vowed to review cars objectively again, even if thrashing got more audience (people like hearing bad stuff about things images/smilies/wink.gif )

Probably images/smilies/smile.gif. The story told me were cobelled together from a few different articles lamenting the end of Top Gear back before they restarted it along with rumors and innuendoes. I'm more than happy to go with your story images/smilies/mrgreen.gif

I know I am being anal about this so apologies but just had to correct one minor flaw in this thread... Fiat is not a sister company to Ferrari. Fiat owns Ferrari as well as it owns Alfa Romeo, Maserati and Lancia.

there, my own dark obsessions cleanced again ..feel better... images/smilies/lol.gif

well it depends on how anal you can get images/smilies/wink.gif The big mother holding company Fiat Auto owns Ferrari, yes BUT the car maker Fiat is a sister to Ferrari as they are both owned by the holding Fiat Auto... you see?

yeah, I've seen a CNN (or some other american channel) car-program, and the lady presenting the car made me feel like I was watching a TV-Shop commercial or something .... I changed the channel as I felt guilty watching the crap ... and she was showing an american town car anyways ...... images/smilies/wink.gif

^ One of us North Americans should rip a copy of an American car show and torrent it out to all the non-North Americans. They could all have a good laugh at how brutally bad our car show are. images/smilies/tongue.gif

^ No, I don't have that DVD, but I really want to get it. I do have the Michel Gondry Collection DVD though that has a bunch of Chemical Brothers music videos on it. That DVD is briliant by the way - if you are a fan of music videos, you need to see it. Michel Gondry is a genius. images/smilies/smile.gif
