Default Bugatti Veyron vs Porsche 917

Watching the Bugatti Veyron versus the Mclaren F1 was exhilarating awesome, but this got me thinking. what will happen if the top gear guys staged a race between the Bugatti Veyron again but this time with the leman racer from 1970 - the mighty Porsche 917, the one steve mcqueen drove. that would be interesting, i mean both cars go to 62mph in 2.5 secs and both cars can do over 250mph! what do you guys think?images/smilies/mellow.gif

First of all, to clear some confusion: the 250+mph 2.5 sec to 62 917 wasn't the 917K from the movie, it was the turbocharged CanAm 917/30. If you want to compare the Veyron to the 917K (which could only do 210), the Veyron would win hands-down at the top end, and even if you substitute the 917K for a long-tail one (which could do 230, at best), it would get annihilated at the highest possible speeds.

P.S. The 917 that raced at Le Mans never had more then 600-650 bhp.

I don't think race car vs. Bugatti Veyron would be a fair race. There are plenty of race cars that are faster in almost any kind of race than the Veyron. Especially drag race. I remember some Jaguar actually topping 400 kph in Le Mans qualifying. When Mulsanne Straight was still straight.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porsche_917

Quote:
The 917/30 could go from 0-62 mph (100 km/h) in 1.9 seconds, 0-100 mph (160 km/h) in 3.9 seconds, 0-200 mph (320 km/h) in 10.9 seconds, and on to a top speed of 260 mph (420 km/h) +
Now that's in qualifying trim with most likely no wastegate springs, but run what you brung.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Veyron
Quote:
The Veyron reaches 200 km/h (124.3 mph) and 300 km/h (186.4 mph) in 7.3 and 16.8 seconds respectively according to Bugatti. According to the February 2007 issue of Road & Track magazine, the Veyron accomplished the quarter mile (~400 m) in 10.2 seconds at an exit speed of 143.6 mph (231.1 km/h). In other tests, however, the car has hit 150 mph in under 10 seconds (see below), so its quarter-mile time is faster.

The Veyron would be demolished. Somewhere between 7-10 seconds slower to 200mph. That is enormous.

But you would need to put road tyres on the Porsche.

Death and hilarity ensue.

The only Group C cars that would stand a chance in terms of top speed against the Veyron would be the Sauber C9 and the WM-Peugeot P87. Those were the only cars that ever cracked 400kph on the Mulsanne.

(The fastest Jaguar XJR-* ever was timed at 389kph)

I think a more fitting comparison would be the Porsche 9ff GT9 or the GT9-R

What if it raced against a rocket propelled German Shepherd? That would be epic!
