Well, probably not, but he is apparently taking part in the Round Britain Powerboat Race in June.
http://www.thisisplymouth.co.uk/news...l/article.html Given that one of the other contenders is "one of the Top Gear programme's cameramen" I wonder if there will be footage as a result, and whether such footage will be part of the upcoming (or another future) series of Top Gear or an as yet unknown May project? We can only wait and see.....

This can only end well...
James crashed a small sailing boat, and he could never get the Herald going the right way, so is he sure an engine will help? Whatever I won't be going near the coast while the race is running, I might be sliced in half.

![]() With Mr May's sense of direction, it's safe to assume that his Round Britain Powerboat Race will end in disappointment; somewhere off the coast of Italy. |

Ah, well not exactly as there is a dirty great gap in the article and I kind of missed the bit where it says "Article continues".
![]() ![]() However I'd be surprised if that's the case as another article I found says he is sharing his boat with Nick Knowles of "DIY SOS" fame. http://www.pressandjournal.co.uk/Art...6113?UserKey=0 Unless of course they plan on changing the name of the programme to "Changing Gear"....... ![]()

I think there was a thread about this a while ago. Noone was sure if he's doing it for himself or tv.

Someone asked about this during the Q&A session after his talk at the Hay on Wye festival last week. Apparently, it clashes with his 'Oz and James' commitments so he is no longer taking part in the race.

Surely given that the race is supposed to take ten days surely the clash would be with his commitments to the new series of Top Gear, unless they are going to take a week's break in the schedules to accomodate some sporting event as usually seems to happen in the middle of a series?

Think about it ... I´d consider that an epic win ...

When I first read the title of the thread I thought Captain Slow was to "motorboat". Completely different line of thinking there.

Aaaannnddd....he's doing it again now.
TV stars Nick Knowles and James May are to compete in tomorrow's Round Britain Powerboat Race. They will be among 47 teams setting off from Gunwharf Quays and speeding along the seafront in Southsea. http://www.portsmouth.co.uk/news/TV-...for.4206090.jp

Yeah we spoke to another of the competitors in the race and apparently James is just entering as part of a 'celebrity' boat and that it has nothing to do with Top Gear - although I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a mention in the series.

http://garmin.blogs.com/uk/2008/06/team-garmin-bat.html
Monday 23rd June Weather conditions: Fair Wind: Force 3/4 After initial technical difficulties Team Garmin were pleased to get back in the waters of Milford Haven and were making steady progress towards Bangor cruising at 45-50 knots as they were cautious of encoring further engine problems. Unfortunately the team were unaware that the connection between the fuel line and fuel filter had become loose and was leaking fuel. Due to the heat from the engine the fuel caught alight. This was swiftly dealt with by the automatic fire extinguishers onboard and thankfully no one was injured although the once pristine beast of a boat suffered some slight charring! The team sensibly headed for Cardigan Bay where they fixed the problem. There were two hours before sun set and the team were debating whether to head for Bangor as they could possibly still complete the leg; a decision was made not to attempt the remainder of the leg in the rapidly fading light and to travel to Inverness via road to take on the Inverness to Edinburgh leg fully fit and prepared. So - they are still going....though presumably James was back in Dunsfold today for recording...... |
