Default Finally, Veyron!

From James May's recent article on topgear.com:

Quote:
But when the Vampire became available, I wasn't. So Hammond got the job instead. This sort of thing happens all the time, and it meant that I'd be doing the piece on the performance of the Bugatti Veyron.

And that wouldn't exactly be a three-car diesel group test. And, at the time, it seemed appropriate to do the swap. The Veyron film would require a certain amount of nerdiness, which I'm good at, and in the end it's just a conventional car.
I'm so very looking forward to the new series.

There has been some stuff about this before but you would miss it unless you were very keen.

It's been in many of the articles about Hammond's crash. images/smilies/wink.gif

Supposedly he broke the 200 MPH mark again with it.

Well I dunno. Unless the Stig gets to take that thing around the track it's pretty pointless haveing it on again. JC's race with it left a pretty good taste, I can't see JM giving it a better run...

I want a comparison of the Veyron and the Enzo on twisty roads. I've read tests where they prefered the Veyron to the Enzo on bendy roads, I find that quite incredible.

What?

If that is even remotely true then the Veyron deserves a museum dedicated to itself.

Yes, I do agree. It's a heavy thing. Didn't Jezza say it was nimble as an Elise when he drove it in the truffel-challenge?

I specifically bought Top Gear Magazine to read the articles by Jeremy and James regarding Richard's accident. I'd never bought it before. Now, three weeks later, I find I could have read them online - free. images/smilies/lmao.gif

Oh well, that's £3.90 I need not have spent - and I got a free DVD so what the hell. images/smilies/smile.gif

By all accounts it's incredibly nimble considering all it's heft. Interesting though that in the EVO megatest (Veyron vs Enzo vs CGT vs Koeneningesingessingnessegg) not one of the writers chose the Veyron as their favourite - the criticism seems to be that the car is just too numb and lacking in feeling.

From what I've seen until today, I think they are right. Not that the Veyron is numb and lacks feeling in general, but that it is numb and lacks feeling in comparison to the other cars. The Enzo and the CGT are much more active and driver cars, where as the Veyron is a superfast GT that happens to handle well for its weight. So if what you want is not the ultimate speed in comfort, but feeling each explosion in a cylinder in your brain, the Veyron is not the top choice. I don't see this as much of a surprise though.

Regards
the Interceptor

But just because it's a GT doesn't mean the driver should be completely isolated and uninvolved. That's what the criticism is - yes the car is blistering fast, but there's no involvement from the driver, no tactility, no feel - the car does all the work without getting the driver involved. A GT can offer all those things - e.g. a Ferrari 612.

Well, there are these and those. Some tend to offer thrill, some tend to offer comfort. If I want the thrill, I buy these, if I want the comfort, I buy those. That doesn't mean certain cars are bad, it just means they differ from my needs. As a superfast vehicle for longer distances, I'd take the Veyron over the other three any day. Of course, an Enzo or a CGT is great, but I can imagine they may get on your nerves after a while. And it's then when I am thankful for that little lack of involvement.

Regards
the Interceptor

I'm with Mercury on this one, I don't see how what JC did with it can be bettered, other than doing a power lap with it.
Still - it'll be nice to look at the thing again - it's a cool piece of work.
