    'Homemade' Heads Up Display

    Hello,
I was told that at one point (possibly hammond) made their own heads up display involving a projector and a CD case.
If anyone has any idea which task, episode or series this was in it would be much appreciated.
    Thanks very much
    Charlie

Smartphone + speedo app with HUD mode + windshield = DIY HUD

Not mine, but I've tried it and it works.

Overhead projector projects image onto CD cover which is a clunky thing even in the best of times but fast forward 30 years and the smartphone takes the cake for an elegant solution. Thanks for sharing +1

You don't get the revs or gears, but the compass works (if the app has it) and if you try to get too many g's, the phone will go flying off your dash.

All you have to do is stick some dark tape on the outside of the windshield were the light from the phone hits it for it to work in the day.

I feel like that's slightly illegal, or at the very least slightly dangerous.

I've seen howtos for retrofitting the Corvette HUD that didn't require the special HUD windshield.

The most important thing is the strength of the light source, a cell phone isn't strong enough during the day, has to be lasers.

There are aftermarket HUD units out there, they're not even that expensive, relatively speaking. IIRC, Defi makes one - I was toying with putting one in the S3 for a while but then realized I didn't have enough space under the dash to install the DefiLink stuff it needed.

You can also put a small patch of window tint on the inside of your windshield to reflect and show up the HUD display from your cell phone better. You can also secure it better, and if you have something like the PLX Kiwi, you *can* actually get RPM and other engine status on your phone - via wireless-connected OBD-II.
