re: the shoes, no service policies in the united states.

i believe that this is entirely for the protection of both the patrons and businesses. we live in a lawsuit-happy society. i'm sure there have been a number of cases in the past involving a patron suing a business, because they were subsequently injured while roaming barefoot in a business.

it's a good policy though. it really doesn't make sense for a person to walk barefoot in a business, especially restaurants. for one, it's unsanitary as hell. not to the other patrons, but to the barefooted individual(s). the floor of bars, restaurants, etc. are dirty as hell! secondly, it is dangerous. you could easily receive lacerations or punctures from objects lying on the floor.

i'm all for freedoms, and i would actually love to walk around barefoot in many places. however, for reasons stated above, it wouldn't be logical. i choose to comprise by simply wearing my flip-flops nearly 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. the only exception to me wearing sandals are for professional settings, or when i'll be in environments where sandals would be a horrible idea (ie. hiking mountain trails).

The rule has actually been around for like 50 years, if not longer I believe, so it's from well before we became lawsuit happy. I think it's just strictly we don't wanna see that kinda stuff while shopping, trying to eat, etc.

Wikipedia of course has quite a few mentions of this phrase: http://www.google.com/search?q=no+sh...Awikipedia.org

It's not illegal at all, it's just that stores, restaurants, etc. are private establishments and most won't let you in if you don't have some type of shoe on or a shirt.

That reminds me, once James got refused entry to a trendy wine bar in London for looking too scruffy!

Yeah, I was just about to say -- do they not have "No Shirt, No Shoes, No Service" there? It's a health issue I believe here, plus who wants to look at people's feet?
Certainly never heard that rule. It's not that common for people to be bare footed but when its warm its very common for people to be goin around with no shirt on.

Same here, but on the beach or whatever. Most places won't let you in though unless they're like on the beach or something.

It's really like broken glass and porcelain and stuff. Americans with their fat inbred stumps (as May would have put it) are prone to drop things.

It's mostly because the floor is rather disgusting everywhere in the States...

...but come to think of it, the floor of that Tesco wasn't exactly clean either...probably dirtier than I'd find in most metropolitan areas in America.

Really? What kind of "health" issue? Like people's feet are any cleaner than their shoes?

Quote:

Why not? It's not like you've never seen feet before.

Y'know, when you think about it, why is it so odd to go barefoot across the street to a shop on dry pavement on a warm day? I think we find this "odd" because it seems that they still value a little thing called "common sense"...something that left North America far too long ago.

Yeah, so? If you want to wear shoes, go ahead. If you want to go barefoot, look out for your own stinking self. It's the lack of common sense and personal responsibility that results in stupid laws and rules like this.
