I really think TG's car review (either on the roads or the TG track) really peaked with series 6 and 7 with some smoked filter work, but otherwise really clean filming, with some fantastic hi speed slo-mo segments and etc.
For reference i bring you a few examples The Lotus Exige S review from series 7 or 8
Ferrari 575 GTC pack vs Vanquish S
TVR Tuscan 2 vs Weismann MF3 film
anyways you get the idea, and since series 10 at least, and getting worse in series 11, all these annoying 'music video' style filters, grain, black n white. It's like they took some good car footage and ran them thru every photoshop filter they could find. The recent Scuderia review
The new Bentley Brooklands review
Ferrari 599 GTB review
This might reflect a generation gap among forum members as the younger ones will probably really like this new filming style and the older ones will like it less. Now there are many good films as well in the recent series, but some of the ones above i felt were just ruined by the filming style, mainly because i couldn't get a good detailed look at the cars in action because of shaky camera style and weird digital filters. |

I'm 21 and it bugs the shit out of me. I was ok once or twice, but I really don't like it.

It does seem like the new videos someone is trying too hard to make it interesting, or atleast like it was made to be viewed while drunk.
Personally my biggest complaint is still that the music, and or the use of the music could be better. Its much more fun to watch when the music completely matches the rest of the scene and script, otherwise it just all turns to shit no-matter how good the video-editing is. For example, in the wiessman video, when it starts out all sober and poetic and with dramatic orchestra stuff building tension and then switches to Jeremy shouting "saucy" (or whatever) with techno/dance in the backround it just sort of makes my whole day 100x brighter. They also let the cars engine speak for itself, instead of adding stupid sound effects (not really a problem recently, but has been in past) Last edited by Ottobon; July 7th, 2008 at 4:40 AM. |

I like them both, and they should really make a nice balance between using awesome filters and slow motion effects and classic stuff versus the MTV/contemporary style.

The post processing is very well done and its needed because the footage that comes out the camera is very bland and unexciting. (look at the out takes, the overcast days look awful).

I was not a big fan of the way they filmed the 430 Scuderia, but the last Bentley one I thought was very good. Actually I will go as so far and say its one of the best review in terms of cinematography. I thought the way it was setup in "two" parts, the slower, more laid back part at the first part and they the mad dash and quick cut in the 2nd. I would not get hanged up on the whole "MTV" style anyways, as its not something new. They have always been using quick edits for a while. First to my head is the Lotus review with the Apache.
I think the mix is good, and, if they kept on doing the same stuff season after season things would get old quick.

stick yourself out in a field with an expensive camera and several people telling you what to do.
now, do you think you shoot anything anywhere near as interesting and eye catching as that? probably not. i like that style of videography, and the filters make it look way better. |

They've been using the style for 11 seasons already. Why pick on it now? Probability will definitely say that there will be a few overdone ones and there's always bound to have one that you won't like. Then again I don't think that you can see this style of video in most car shows.
I personally like the artsy visual style. Fits the subject.

They are just overdoing it with the filters and shaky cameras and all that crap, people normally use that stuff to make a dull video or movie look interesting, but with something like top gear you really don't need it.
It is great to some some artsy side to the show but for me it is just a little over the top, they should remember the show is made for simple petrolheads

If you don't like it -> don't watch it
if the filming style bothers you -> don't watch it why does everyone feel the need to piss on everything TG does lately? |

The Ferrari 599 is interesting when it stands by the side of the road, it doesn't need all that fancy filming.
However, I like their reviews and I don't mind the filming that much. I guess they could tone it down a bit and "grow up" a little or whatever you'd like to call it.

I thought I was the only one noticing this. And I agree totally with you. It gets tiresome to watch mainly because there usually isn't one clear shot of the car where you can admire it in its entirety. For longer than 1 millisecond anyway.

Aren't you people ever fucking happy?
"Oh my god whens TG back?" "Without TG I will die" "6 seconds until new TG" Then as soon as it's back, a majority of you bitch and whine about the most trivial things.

I'm not really sick of it, but I do agree that stuff like the Lotus Elise review and the "British" sportscar review were some of the best TG reviews. I also really liked the stuff on 10x01 when they were looking for the best driving roads in Europe.

Yes, stop with the shaky cam. I like the new wide lens they have, without the fisheye effect, but all the grainy filters, the 3 fps black and white shot in the brooklands, the unbeleivable shaky cam they started using are all too much. If they removed those, and kept the editing as it was, the reviews would be miles better.
