i think its better for you to get a bit of training in circuit driving before driving at the ring (arguably the king of circuit) just to understand about proper driving line.
because if your driving line is messy, it really looks (and i guess feels) really scary to you and other drivers. *just imagine if someone in front of you brake when it supposed to be full throttle in that section*

GT4 has actually given me a whole new respect for the 'ring - I reckon if I went there now I'd actually drive slower than pre-GT4. It's bloody frightening enough in the game...

I think the Nuernbergring is difficult because it has so many blind turns, off-bank turns, and everything looks the same! There seems to be no points of reference!

Old race cars drivers will tell you that they feared race tracks because they could take your life. You never can assume you're immortal and survive any accident. Old circuits were made to be feared. It wasn't those pussy rings that has many safety runouts and soft feather pillows on every corner. If you fail to respect a track, you'll pay with your life.

It's one thing for a race car driver to risk his life for the Gran Prix. It's another for a complete amature to take the same risks!

I'm a weekend racer myself and I tend to be a pretty conservative driver. Why?
It's because I'm using my own equipment that is fully funded through my own wallet. If I had a million dollar sponsor and a full racing team, I would take more risks and maybe achieve better results.

GT4 has a simulated Nuernbergring. Do about 100 laps on that before you go about on the real time attack! Also, renting a car you've never driven and using that as a track car is not a good idea. Even if it's technically faster, you might be able to drive your own car (which you know thoroughly) for an even better time. It usually takes me 5 or so laps to get to know a car. It takes a lot more than that (actually several races) to actually be able to push it hard. Porsches are really tricky things beyond its grip limits. I've driven a few and that's why I dislike them.

I visited Hannover Germany on business last December. I was hoping for a ride on the 'bahn in my boss's friend's gutted racing M3. He was busy

Anyway, on the stretch of the 'bahn I travelled, there were speed limits. It seems that anywhere near population there are limits. I was underwhelmed.

As for the Nurburgring, I wouldn't have any ideas other than to say you've been on it and stay out of the way of faster cars. It takes serious drivers years to learn it, and people DO die on the ring. On top of that you want to drive a car you don't know... Not a good combination.

I could spend years learning how to take the Big Bend and the Uphill at Lime Rock correctly, and that's a small circuit, around 1.4 miles IIRC.



The ring is extremely long and tricky. You are insane if you don't think it will bite your head off.



Have you ever driven on ANY track before? Don't get silly with the Nurburgring.

I have years of track experience and I'd think carefully before attempting it.

The ring has plenty of other people on it. Just watching the segments on Top Gear you should know that. Don't do anything stupid, keep it at 7/10 and have fun.

Doesn't sound like the brightest idea...getting a car you don't know and then on THE NURBURGRING?!?! Are you insane? Don't know if you ever raced before but racing on the Nurburgring seriously is gonna take some time and lots of skill. Even a normal track with hills is hard, car behaves different when going uphill and downhill, don't even mention cornering downhill or uphill...

Couldn't read all but I suggest you doing it in your own car and do some trackdays first, explore the limits of you car before killing yourself in Germany.

Oh oke didn't know that, I'm not saying it because I think you can't do it, just that people have done things before and crashed...accidents always happen when you don't expect them. Racingdrivers crash too you know.

I'll say come out and say it. Topgeargirl, I think its a bad idea to go there with no experience and start pushing it to try to set a good lap time.

I say this with respect for whatever driving skill or knowledge you have of track driving. Read this Nurburgring website and it's advice to beginners.. http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/

Even with complete disregard for your own personal safety, imagine if you accidentally hurt a fellow motorist because you lost control of your car for a split second. Imagine the gravity of the guilt you would feel if you hit a biker at speed and killed him/her. What about their family and friends or children?

I think in the end, your feelings of responsibility should override your need to prove yourself or desire for a "rush". Go and have a good time, drive cautiously and safely, speed should come with experience (multiple trips imo)

Thats a good post. I think TGG might not quite have wrapped her head around the fact that the 'Ring is a killer. Literally. People die there, and they do when they push themselves too hard.

The 944 and 911 are totally different beasts. On top of that, are you talking "classic" 911 (pre-993) or 993/996/997? If you're taking a classic, that's a tricky car drive to begin with.
