Get over it.

Germany for sure wasn't the one responsible for the first world war.

And I'm pretty sure German Engineering and Technology would still be here without the camp labouring.

This is going reeeeeeeeaaaallly off-topic, but hey...

The first act to spark the world war was the civil unrest in the Austro-Hungarian empire. The ethnic minorities were not happy and one of them, Serbia protested quietly. A secret society that was linked to the command of Serbian army planned the assassination of Franz Ferdinand, the Archduke of Austro-Hungarian double monarchy. Ironically he went to Serbia to soothe the nation and change the politics ruled by his predecessor. Because the Archduke was assassinated, one of the empire's generals that demanded war against the serbs now had an excuse and made it an outrage in the court. The court of Austria-Hungary did not want a war, since the state of the empire wasn't very stable, but agreed on, that the assassination should not go unnoted and the serbs needed to know what they had done. They gave out an ridiculous ultimatum to the Serbian Government in hope the serbs would not agree on it, because they wanted the excuse to go to war.

On July 28 1914 Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. As the result Russia begun mobilizing military forces on the 31th, because Serbia was a slavic nation, thus related to russia. Also there was a pact that Russia would defend Serbia's independence if they would allow Russia to invade Bosnia in 1909.

The strong ally of Austria, Kaiser Wilhelm, emperor of Germany tried diplomatic communications with the emperor of Russia, Tcsar (or however you spell it) Nicolai the second, to have Russia demobilize their forces from the Austrian border. Austria-Hungary had moved the mass of its troops to Serbian border in hope that Germany would mobilize if Russia would threaten the northern borders. The final answer to Wilhelm was that Russia could not withdraw the troops because it then would be impossible to mobilize them again if a war would break out. Germany, first to act on the catch-22 situation declared war on Russia in hope of crushing the forces near Austrian border before they could act. At the same time France, which had a pact with Russia mobilized military forces, in which Germany answered by declaring war on France and quickly invading Belgium to gain access to mainland of France and a very good attack route.

If this wasn't confusing enough and desperate, Britain declared war on Germany because of its interests in the colonies in Africa and India. Britain could not remain neutral without the help of France and Russia to protect the colonies. Japan joined the war only to seize control over Germany's colonies near Japan, greed. Italy, even though they had a pact with Austria and Germany, joins the war against Germany because France promises them the italian speaking territories of Austria-Hungary. United States joins the war because Germany uses submarines to sink unprovoked all trade ships coming to the ports of France/Britain in hope of withering their strength. Hungary sides with Germany and Austria to invade back the lands Serbia had stolen from them, revenge.

So, according to me it was a disgruntled, radical university student from Serbia or a conservative, arrogant and warmongering old military man from Austria.

Remember, history is written by the victor.

those are all thing germany had nothing to with, and just helped whoever had a problem so they could start the war

EXACTLY! germany was just founded out of several small kingdoms, and as a result, didn't have any colonies or foreign interests. and they had problems with this, and went to africa to start fuss in the harbours, hoping someone would react and they could attack. but that didn't work out, and once that dude was shot down, they had their perfect jumping ground to start a war

they didn't care shit about the etnic minorities, they just wanted colonies and decided to invade all countries that had some

Did you even read what I post?

Germany did not have interests in "lebensraum" or colonial riches, they were in fact big in East India and South America, and to add there were still territories in Africa to annex. Germany just had won the war against France, and gained Alsace and Lorienne from France. The reason for the declaration of war was that the communication between russia cut out, thus making it impossible to peacefully negotiate. Russia was threatening Austria-Hungary, which were the closest allies ever seen in History. You just can't let someone go and bash up your allies while you would not do anything. It's common sense.

The first battles of the war were fought in GERMAN colonies, which were INVADED by FRANCE, BRITAIN and JAPAN. Not the other way around.

Hostilities were begun by and only by the Austro-Hungarian empire. If you say russia did not provoke Germany that's a lie. Mobilizing and moving forces to the border is the closest thing you can get to a war. They refused to stand down and peacefully set out the crisis.

Am I the only one that got offended by the Quintessentially British Mini?

I demand an apology, this stereotyping of Britian has gone on too long!

jap ... german government is in uproar about this incident ... ...
... actualy I don't think they even know what TopGear is and are not very familiar with any works (or jokes) of JC (these philistines ... images/smilies/lol.gif)

anyway, I personaly (born in germany, lived there for 35 years, now living in belgium, still only a stondrop from the german border) had a good laugh about Jerry's Mini Joke (as I had about thee meet the nighboars episode in germany images/smilies/biggrin.gif)

I personaly would like to tell these pricks a word or two about thinking they can speak for the hole of germany...

the disturbing trend of, "well it's illegal here so let's prosecute those elsewhere!" is growing.

This whole thread reminds me of when I was visiting my father in germany recently. We were at Ikea and getting some furniture for his flat, and needed to get it couriered out to his place. So we went to the proper counter, and my dad was giving out his address to the lady behind the counter, until we got to the point were we needed the postcode. Neither of us could remember the exact code, and neither of us could be bothered trudging out to the car to retrieve it, so we tried to see if we could get away without it.
Hardly! This being Germany, everything must be done right! You must give the lady the postcode! We tried explaining that it was in the car, but....
"You Must Give Me Ze Postcode!"
"No, we don't remember it!"
"You Vill Give Me Ze Postcode!"
At this point my father turns to me and exclaims...
"You vill give me ze postcode or you vill be shot!"

...

We ended up having to give the lady the postcode, and we got the our stuff in the end, but boy was that lady pissed after that!

Hey all im the new guy, and i gotta say, this is akin to the "war on christmas" crap here in america this year. I thought that joke was HILARIOUS and the fact that people can't laugh at it is proof that they have no sense of humor. Then they turn around and say that they DO, they're protesting because it's offensive. It wasn't offensive at all! Jeremy Clarkson isn't out to change people's minds, he's just a funny car journalist, and people who got offended by this probably don't know anything about his past work.
