Default SIARPC Rant!

Is it me (most probably) or do you find since (I'm guessing) season 12 that all the SIARPC segments are becoming well a bit late night show-ish. Gone are the days when the celebrities come on and talk about cars, rather we get cross promotional stuff that really has no place on TG. Now before you all throw abuse here me out:
1) Last week Sienna Millers GI Joe ad
2) Parkinson's CD (Though being Parkinson who would mind)
3) Marky Mark And that terrible Max Payne ad
and the list goes on..

Now normally I wouldn't mind. But when we think TG it is almost insulting to the trio to have to sell out in order to attract that celebrity crowd. If you remember back to season 10 when they did the double celebrity thing it was as Clarkson put it "abysmal failure". To me it is this whole cross promotion thing is the same. I usually love the SIARPC segment. But recently i find myself forwarding through it because of the ads.

Just a rant. Anyone with me on this?

Side note: If you recall back to when Clarkson tested the Enzo he said something along the lines about how TG would normally never do any cross promotion. Side point. Actually scratch that. My bad.

I dunno, I'd rather 2 minutes of promotion and a good guest then a shit guest who is only relevant to the british market. That being said my favorite interview was Mr.Fry and I don't remember him promoting anything.

If that segment isn't to your liking, just skip past it. Of all the ones since the beginning in 2002, only a few of them were really worth watching. Probably why the keep recycling guests like Jay Kay, Michael Gambon and Gordon Ramsay.

I know JC made a joke out of it, but I'd almost go as far as say they were promoting grindr.

Couldn't agree more. And yes Mr.Fry was a one of the few guests who was watchable this season. I must ask why dont they bring on someone like Lee Evans or Dara O'Brien. Even just for a laugh Graham Norton. That would be images/smilies/lol.gif it would def liven up that bit.

No, no. In order to promote something, the person has to benefit from it in some way. I don't believe Mr. Fry is on the Grindr salary. If anything, he could possibly be construed as promoting his tour of the US show but that aired a long time ago and there were no clips. I didn't see any promotion there at all.

Yes. This.

Why Michael McIntyre? AGHGHGHG! I'd say get Frankie Boyle on, but they'd probably have to edit about 3/4 of it out images/smilies/tongue.gif

Patrick Stewart pimped Star Trek Nemesis like a five dollar hooker, and Simon Pegg was there to push Hot Fuzz.

Seriously, there have been plugs since the beginning, just because you've only noticed it now doesn't mean that they weren't there before.

I don't see what the problem is... Late Night TV can be good (with the right host) and SIARPC is good (when done in the correct format). Nothing is wrong with these guests hocking their wares, the very fact that they are of immense fame and on the show is good enough for the majority of us.

Why don't they just pick guys from Mock the Week anyways, pick the normal guys and let them rip on Jeremy while they are sitting there, would make an awesome segment.

TG is one of the biggest shows in the world. Its viewership is in the hundreds of millions (thanks to this site images/smilies/smile.gif ) and due to this i realize that plug ins are a great way to advertise. But it is a humble line. One minute its this movie trailers next it is that stupid crazy frog selling ringtones.... If you think thats not possible then fine but I see it all the time on TV. Anyway i Digress. Point is the segment to me is just frustrating. Doesnt make any sense to plug that stuff. ITs a CAR SHOW not LATE NIGHT WITH JC. (hahaha that would be a great title) anyway thats my two cents.

Also all the musicians who happened to have a new CD or biography out they just couldn't help but talk about... but actually, I'm fine with that. It's not too bad when they just talk about it a bit.
But outright showing trailers of their films, like with Sienna Miller, is pushing it too far in my eyes, it's just that sort of obnoxious INYOURFACE sort of advertising/plugging that's really annoying in a show like Top Gear.

While thats true, there are however people that are looking forward to seeing this film (myself included) and in my case i was interested to hear what she was going to say about GI Joe. I can see your point but honestly, i don't see it as of critical importance. The only way Top Gear is going to get celebs is if they 'stroke' their egos. Its always been a law of celebrities is that you treat their ego first and their personality second. Its not a fair one but its always been there.
I've never been a big fan of the SIARPC segment but they do have some good ones on there, i do seem to be in the minority in that i think Michael McIntyre is incredibly funny (i spent most of that SIARPC segment like Jeremy in tears). If they have a celeb on that doesn't interest me i just go and put the kettle on and so on. Just because its on tv doesn't mean you have to watch it and bitch about it. We leave that role for the Daily Mail.

FTFY.

Double SIARPC was one of the big reasons I disliked S11. There was only one time it worked for me: 11x04 (Fiona Bruce and Kate Silverton); and it was because, to me, the ladies really seemed to enjoy their time there. I didn't really get that vibe from the other guests (except for Jay Kay; but he was the only solo SIARPC that series).

Indeed. Very rare is someone there not to promote something. (One case in point: Jennifer Saunders, 10x07.)

Also recall that, during S12, Jonathan Ross--where I'd think most of that series' guests would usually have gone to flog whatever they were doing (I'm thinking Marky Mark, especially...although, IMO, his TG appearance turned out quite well)--was off the air serving his suspension for his radio antics. So TG probably had to take some of them on.

Looks like TG is starting to take more cues from TGA. This is scary because I thought that TGA was meant to be learning from TG, not the other way round. First the half-arsed challenges and general meh-ness of 13x04, and now this. images/smilies/mellow.gif Most of the guests on TGA have been either plugging something, or cross-promoting an SBS program. Very few of TGA's guests seem genuinely interested in being there ... other than the V8 Supercar drivers, only James Morrison and HG Nelson seemed genuinely into it.

Sadly, it looks like SIARPC is going this way too. Why can't we just have a rotation of the guests that actually WANT to be on there. .. I could cope with Jay Kay, Stephen Fry, Sir Michael Gambon and Jennifer Saunders as SIARPC guests every season. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I think all the plugging may have something to do with the SIARPC's agents, rather than the stars themselves.
