I'm not sure I understand.

How is lowering the audio rate "tweaking" ?

Isn't there a setting in the encoding software where you select the rate ?

A couple of things:

"VLC player" (a free download) is famous for playing all formats.

Also:

Hmm ... suppose if you don't like vnc player you can always visit
http://www.xvid.org/
and grap yourself the codec.

That way winamp and other players will work too.

Out of curiousity, What is the lowest spec for processor that can decode H.264 Video? Thank you in advance.

H.264 at the current bitrate of a 350MB Top/Fifth Gear episode rip is playable on my 667MHz PowerBook G4.

As much as I'd also like to see H.264 become the standard format for video here, I realize that the CPU requirements for the higher quality would leave a lot of people out in the cold, and the relative benefit just isn't there.

For people on this board to say that H.264 (AVC) is crap or QuickTime is garbage, realize that the ISO ratified H.264 as an open standard. AVC does not have to be played in QuickTime Player, if that's your gripe. The construct, however, of H264/AVC is that it exists in the QuickTime container.

It's not going away, and having such a high-quality, ISO ratified codec will bring some order to all the crazy derivatives of MPEG-4 video out there (DivX, Xvid, WMV).

Whatever we do, do not support any closed formats like Windows Media or DivX. XviD and later, H.264, should be the only formats considered for DVD/DTV rips because they will be playable well into the future.

I, for one, hope the current format remains intact.

I know that stuff like H.264 and OGG offers slightly better quality. However, if Vuk, Viper007Bond and the other people capping FG/TG were to switch over to these formats, an awful lot of people with standalone DivX/XviD players would find themselves out in the cold.

Not all of us want to watch what we download on our PCs. Some of us DO like watching TV ... well, on a TV ...

So, thanks to the cappers/rippers for sticking with the tried and true XviD/MP3 combo - it works great in my MTK1389-based DivX DVD Player! images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Right! Standalone Divx (99% used as Xvid players) are the reason why the scene isn't going for better codecs...
And at the bitrate we are talking about newer codecs don't offer that much improvement... Its mostly at low bitrates where they stand out...

Xvid is considered to have 90-95% of the quality of newer codecs, so for the sake of compatibility I hope that this discussion ends like the other 452 have ended -> Things stay as they are...

//edit: when I finally decide if I should get a 42'' Plasma and a MCE PC, I'll prolly swizch camps images/smilies/wink.gif

I'm quite agree with that.
Now everything on BT or Emule is encoded in XviD, movies , TV Series. The quality is fairly good than Divx.
