Default The postfix `GTI' for fast

In Series 1 Episode 5, Jezza calls Audi A8 `limousine GTI';
In Series 3 Episode 7, Jezza calls Porsche Cayenne `tank GTI';
In Series 9 Episode 2, Jezza calls Audi TT `cow GTI'.

It's clear that the word GTI is in his vocabulary for fast.

I just want to ask where else on top gear the postfix `GTI' is used to describe a car that is fast?

Just means a faster version. Comes from the VW Golf (Rabbit in the States I believe) which is widely credited as being the first ever "Hot Hatchback" (some would argue the Alfasud was actually the first) which was "fettled" by some VW engineers in the 70's working in their own time, according to urban legend at least, to produce a practical car that was quicker and handled better than the 2 seater sports cars of the time. They called it the GTi.

Hence anything that is quicker than it should be becoming the ........... GTi.

You can substitute "Type-R" for this, too.

Er, no? GTi works because VW isn't the only firm to have used these letters to denote a fast version, and because it was the original.

Type-R is Honda specific - it no more works than AMG, Alpine, Cupra, Cloverleaf, Scuderia, Shelby etc etc.

I know the i in GTi stands for injection, but what do the G&T stand for? Grand Tourer? Kinda weird for a Golf, eh?

I believe it stands for "Gin and Tonic Injection" - the Golf GTi was so fast compared to other affordable cars of it's day that owners often needed a stiff drink after driving it to calm their nerves. VW advocated administering the drink intravenously to speed up the relief and reduce the coronary stress.

Hence why they now use TSi on some of their models as owners are said to prefer Tequila Sunrises. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

.... It's Italian nomenclature.

GTI Gran Turismo Iniezione (Grand Touring Injection)
GTO Gran Turismo Omologato (Homologated for racing)
GTA Gran Turismo Alleggerita (Lightened)
GTB Gran Turismo Berlinetta (Coupe GT)
GTC Gran Turismo Compact
GTS Gran Turismo Spider
GTV Gran Turismo Veloce (Very fast, and pretty vague lol)

I know that. I just want to find out all the places in TG (and in Jezza's videos) that he uses the work 'GTI' on a car other than Golf/Polo/205/206... Thanks for all the replies anyway.

Well I figured as much. I just don't understand why a VW Golf is considered a Grand Tourer. It's a small family hatch for chrissakes!

With my sensible hat back on I think GT got hijacked for use on anything with vaguely sporting pretensions. Before the Golf IIRC there was a Beetle that was badged GT with a 1600cc engine and that's not a Grand Tourer by any stretch of the imagination. Couldn't say if VW were the original perpetrators however.
