I'm from China. It is exciting to see you starting this fantastic project.

I started making subtitles with a few friends(all Chinese) in Feb, 07, for series 9. We called ourselves "TransGear subtitle team", making English and Chinese subtitles into .srt files. By now, we've done two episodes: 9x03 and 9x04. It'll be our pleasure to share our works to you.

Anyway, now we're making 9x05's and in big trouble: the team is seriously short of hands. English subtitle is done, but full of problems that we can't solve. That's why I'm here to ask for your help. I'm sure it'll be a piece of cake for you. And it can save you some time in making your subtitles.

    subtitle for 9x03:
    Vuk's 423M Rip or FOV's 700M Rip
These are last edited by Z102, he corrected a few mistakes in the old one. Great job my friend!

basically they're all the same, you'll have to use VobSub codec to display the subtitle with your video, but please make sure the filenames of the video and .srt are the same. Subtitle Workshop is a brilliant tool to modify the srt file.

    subtitle for 9x04:
    http://www.mediafire.com/?94ywyyqnywm
This is based on Fov Rip, but I'm sure it can also work on Vuk's rip by changing the filenames to the video's name, such as:
    Top Gear - [09x04] - 2007.02.18 [Vuk].eng.srt

So do we just grab an episode and trascribe as we watch? I could probably do an hour long episode in about 3 hours I think (I regularly transcribe from audio for work - writing up interviews etc so am used to it).

But it will take extra time to add correct time stamps so it may take a few days to do each episode.

What's the next stage after transcribing the episode - what software do we need to create
It's great to have a professional like you in the team. I'm quite familiar with the software of adding time stamps. So after you finish transcribing, pls just hand over the task to me. I can make the timeline in several hours

I suggest we do the latest season first. For not everyone has the video of previous seasons, and most people are probably more interested in new eps. Though I do think some previous eps are more classic.

Since we have 9x03, 9x04 and 9x05 (courtesy of bitcars), I suggest we finish series 9, since that would only be three more eps. Then we can start from series 1 and continue until series 10 starts.

BTW: I have found English subtitles for the Winter Olympics special, so we can skip that as well

That's a brilliant idea, and don't forget to correct the mistakes in these three files.
    Especially in 9x05

BTW, I suggest you (or we) start from the latest seasons, because 1. They are much more popular than the old ones, not all people have the video of the 1st season. 2. Making subtitle is a huge project that takes lots of passion and hard-work, thus, I think it's better for us to be a little bit less ambitious, and do it from the nearest.

bitcars i tried your srt file for the 9x03 and it works brilliantly with Vuk's rip as well.

There are one or two sentences missing but that's a very good job.

    Thanks for this mate.

Count me in for syncronization of subtitles or for anything other. I cannot guarantee on writedown, my english is not perfect

    For anyone new,

Can we please try and keep all the subtitle talk in one thread. You don't need to start a new thread to get your message read.

Problem with TG has always been the British slang...I translate movies and TV Shows to Hebrew all the time and while it's American I can easily translate it. The reason why I never even went near TG is that so many of the jokes would be very difficult to deliver after translation and I'll be damned if i know how to translate Bolloks or whatever you spell that word

a good thing to do when transcribing is adding notes for every subtleties in the translation, for double entendres collocial expressions, if something is ment ironically etc.
This usualy greatly helps translators who arn't totaly bilingual.

    That's good news, thank you.

The srt is actually the work of the TransGear team: catchup, RS4 and me. catchup is in this thread as well.

Basically we were looking for help. Very sorry about the other threads...the second one looks like a mistake, catchup tried to post the thread yesterday. But he kept failing at that time. So instead I did the post and immediately realized that it shouldn't be there. But the weird thing is his thread showed up afterwards. I'm very sure that he didn't mean to post that one because the time was about 3 or 4 am in China when it showed up, it was impossible for him to post anything.

I'm terribly sorry for the mistake I made. I hadn't read all the thread before I post a new one. And my post couldn't be showed in the forum after I clicked the "Submit" button. So I post twice. I promise this will never happen again. Thanks bitcars for his explaination for me.

Ok, so that my offer doesn't get lost in all the talk about what thread goes where I'm repeating it in this thread as well. I'm willing to attempt and fill up any gaps in the english subtitles you create, just please mark the spots where you want me/us to take a look.

    Thank you mate.

You can edit the ".srt" file using WordPad. The words that we couldn't figure out is marked as "/" in the ".srt" file. Using the "Ctrl+F" function, you can easily find them in the file. So you can see the "time stamp" of the sentence which the "/" is in. By now, there still remain 27 "/"s.

    The download link is http://www.mediafire.com/?f020dkzk1k1

My email is visualff@gmail.com, you can also upload the .srt file to http://www.mediafire.com/, thank you

Ok done, fixed file along with comments is here: http://www.mediafire.com/?1einy2mdjgg Have missed a few, if anyone else wants to take a jab, feel free. Btw one minor suggestion: although the subs fit fine on a computer monitor, many lines are too long for playback on a TV, using a desktop dvd player, you might want to split them into shorter groups for any future releases.

Thanks a lot mate, you really did help us big!

I think I work out the one at 00:56:54,200, Is it "...One side of the fence or the other"
It seems to mean "friend or enemy?"

And we forget to mark '/' at 00:33:48,335, 00:34:04,477 and 00:34:31,954, they're all in the part of Kristin's lap. And the one at 00:43:20,821, we marked it as "x", the 00:44:58,855 one is pretty tricky too, it's in the Stig's lap bit. Could you please check these as well?

Yes it's indeed "one side of the fence or the other" and it means to decide between two things (it actually is a derivative of "sitting on the fence" which means being undecided about something with two possible outcomes). As for the others:
00:33:48,335 "No, this is smooth and perfect in every way, I can't see anything wrong with that."
00:34:04,477 "And then..." (Cristin cuts him so JC doesn't complete the sentence)
00:34:31,954 "And now, here we are, across the line, perfect!"
00:43:20,821 (Can't make it out either)
00:44:58,855 "Seeming it doesn't bite Stig in the face on the way."

Finished translating English subtitles for the Top Gear Winter Olympics Special into Spanish. They can be found here:http://www.mediafire.com/?ahzuyyzdoer

Additionally, I have uploaded the English subtitles I used, (http://www.mediafire.com/?6zoodz0mvmm) for future reference, since two of the segments are from past episodes of Top Gear (5x06 and 7x03, I believe).

Now, with permission of catchup and co, I'll take the English subtitles they made for 9x03, 9x04 and 9x05 and translate them into Spanish, too. As I'm doing that, I'll correct any mistakes I find.

Since then there would be only 3 episodes of the latest season left, I think someone should start doing them so that we get this season finished as soon as possible.
