Anyway, if Richard had sprained his ankle in Bolivia and not at home in Herefordshire (not Hertfordshire, you Fail pikeys!) while running in the woods, IMO, wouldn't he have sought medical care while there instead of waiting to return to Blighty?

I dunno - if he shared Jeremy's opinion of the place, I can definitely imagine him toughing it out 'til he got back home! images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I was rather surprised as well the frist time I saw such a construction, as we are always told not to mix electicity and water. Still not sure how it works and why I didn't get electrocuted. images/smilies/wacko.gif
But it does heat the water and I lived to tell the tale. Then, I'm only 5.3, I can imagine it too be a bit more adventerous when your Jezza's size and you're in danger of actually touching the bare wires.

without better details, and maybe some pics... sounds like its using, what i could best describe [simply] as the soldering iron method. electricity is used to heat a specific point/area which the water goes through. and this time of day (for me) my proper electrical terms are failing me, but you're essentially creating a ton of resistance in the line when doing this. and if its not properly being cooled, by the heat energy being taken away (absorbed by the water), the load would become too great and the fuse will blow.

so keeping the fusebox nearby would make for fixing it alot quicker.

if all the wires are bare from coming outa the wall/whatever right to the showerhead... then well.. thats just 3rd rate craftsmanship. touching one of those might... not be the most comfortable thing you could do. just depends on the amperage its using (amps kill, not voltage).

The electric shower
thats quite fascinating.

sounds like, theres just enough salinity in the water to tranfer some electric current, but not enough to really reach far from the shower head. there was a mythbusters episode where they tried to create a water-based taser. and even their attempts at putting the actual taser components into a water stream, it wasnt that effected outside a couple feet or so at best, and that depending on the strength of the stream.

though i can kinda see what they're trying to accomplish...

as its really just a rudimentary and less efficient form of small "tankless" water heaters you can get to install at faucets in your home or business. local cafe had one in the rest room, a small stainless steel box under the sink.

....ANYHOW i could go on with more details and speculation... but i feel i've done enough damage of being james-like. images/smilies/tongue.gif

I have point of use hot water in my house. Each place has it own hot water heater box, but the shower shares the sinks box. I am not sure I would care for that solution for my shower. The boxes were kind of expensive to put in, but they paid for themselves in 2 years so after 5 years I am WAY ahead of the game.

Unfortunately that violates a couple of core principles of electrical engineering, but it sounds good. Mostly your idea of a "partial conductor." That doesn't exist. We have semiconductors, but that's very different quantum mechanically. Anyway.

well, just a minor note here (for those who didnt see that mythbusters episode), the water was... for lack of better word, particalizing after it left the nozzle of their water guns. thus the water wasnt a solid, connected, stream. which is generally what happens with shower heads as well.

That happens with all streams of water. If you flash a stream of water with a strobe light you can see it break down into smaller and smaller "particles" proportionate to the speed of the strobe. If you've never seen this done, it's AWESOME to watch. Or maybe I'm just a nerd. Yeah...

(The museum where I worked for a while had a demo of this. My friend and I spent way too much time watching it. It's really, really cool.)

The Caribbean sounds tempting, but there is no work, which means that one day, whether you like it or not, you’ll end up like all the other expats, with a nose like a burst beetroot, wondering if it’s okay to have a small sharpener at 10 in the morning. And, as I keep explaining to my daughter, we can’t go to America because if you catch a cold over there, the health system is designed in such a way that you end up without a house. Or dead.
If the Democrats have their way, that may be fixed shortly... (I hope!)

Well, at least your insurance will cover it. In the US they probably won't, cause they'll say it was a pre-existing condition. images/smilies/tongue.gif

But just to reiterate, Quebec is NOT Canada, Jeremy. Despite what the french tell you. Plus we have a relatively stable government, some fine universities, above average health care, and a good standard of living. The only problem is, the winters. Unless you live in Vancouver, which pretty much has the same climate is Britain.

and if you go to quebec, just dont stay in montreal, thats not quebec, go to other town like Québec. The 101 rule police du francais are all in montreal, if you leave the island of mtl, there is no more of that damm stupid police of french. The rest of quebec just dont give a damm if you can speak english or not, but try to talk to us in french, you ill have more chance of getting help, if not then search a bit more and you ill surely find someone who can talk english. But for climate , well yeah we do get a bit of snow
