Top Gear and the Bugatti Veyron

Hi all,
I recently watched an episode of fifth gear where Tiff Needell drove and tested the Bugatti Veyron. He was allowed into the Veyron factory (which was absolutely gorgeous filled with at least 15,000,000 pounds worth of Bugatti. He then road tested it normally and then did performance handling test on a track, so bascially thrashing it round.
It seems to me that this 'handling' test would be the equivalent of the Stig thrashing it round the track to set a new lap record. So why won't bugatti let top gear take it round. My guess is that with top gears 'reputation'(amybe not the right word) that Bugatti think that they aren't as responsible or mature as Tiff Needell and the fiifth gear team. The car may be 3 yrs old now but i reckon it could still beat the current Ascari A10 lap time. I mean why not:
-James May took it to it's top speed images/smilies/may.gif
-Jeremy raced it from italy to london images/smilies/jc.gif
-Richard raced a Eurofighter Typhoon with it images/smilies/hamster.gif
So here's hoping that for Season 11 bugatti finally let Top Gar lay their hands on a the bugatti for a lap time.

Same here! Would be interesting to see what the lap time would be. I get the feeling it won't be right at the top as I always see the Bugatti being built for straight line speed and not cornering.

Still......!

I for one doubt it will beat the Ascari.

now make no mistake, I adore this car and would kill to own one, but I just think it's too heavy to make it around the corners really really fast.

Sure it'll own everything on the straights but I'm not sure it can hold its speed as well on the twisty bits. Especially hammerhead would be tough

Either way, put it on the track, so I can see it go off the start line like shit on dynamite and can hear it roaring off like a summer thunderstorm on the move.

Maybe it will not be the fastest on the board. But who cares? The very rich ones are buying the Veyron not because it's the fastest, but because its the most expensive anyway.

I can see the line "Is Pierre-Henri Raphanel the Stig?" already in this forum. images/smilies/biggrin.gif

Greetings, lip

It's depressing to see how Fifth gear, for most of the time, tests brand new cars. They had the Maserati Gran turismo and now Jason Potato is going to test the new Nissan GTR.

Its because Fifth Gear concentrates more on doing car tests and road reviews while TG has focused more on entertainement and stunts in recent seasons.

I think it will be fun to watch a test, but I don't see it knocking the Ascari off the leaderboard. Maybe when it first came out it had a shot at the top, but now. No way.

I'd love them to do a segment where they compare 'the most expensive' supercar with the 'cheapest supercar'. Pitting the Veyron against the Ultima GTR720. They could visit the factories and compare the philosophies. They could talk to some owners and compare the cultures. A comedy road test and a head to head performance test to follow. I can imagine Jezza beating off over the Veyron while admitting that if you are the sort of person with a beard, a pencil behind your ear, and like to wear boiler suits the GTR is a mind bogglingly great option and really really cheap, especially if you want to build one in your shed.

easily, because Bugatti doesn´t want to even have the chance of the veyron beaten. All tests were SINGLE tests, not comparisions.

In that case, which it probably isn't, because the Veyron is really ment to be fast in a straight line.

Well, Bugatti could just let them do the power test and show that.
Or they could let the Stig do the lap and if it isn't the fastest, just not let the BBC air it.

Sticking with that idea, which isn't quite correct... maybe they already tested it, and it wasn't quickest (cause it's not even close at hp/ton compared to the lap board leaders), and they're not airing (or even talking about) it. End of story.

The BBC wouldn't agree to those terms - the terms of agreement for any car they put around the track would be that it's down to the BBC whether the video gets shown and if you don't want it shown don't lend us the car in the first place.

Editorial independence is a MASSIVE deal to the BBC and even more so is commercial independence - thats why they'd never agree (and the BBC lawyers would put a stop to even the suggestion) to putting a car round the track and not showing the video if the lap wasn't as fast as the manufacturer expected.
