Top Gear Special to be shown in High Definition

The BBC is billing the Top Gear special - which will also be available in high definition - as the "most ambitious and arduous challenge" yet.

"Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond attempt to race from Northern Canada to the North Pole, 450 miles away," the BBC announced. "The terrain in between is some of the toughest on earth - a mix of mountainous land masses and jagged sea ice where temperatures can drop to a mind-numbing minus 65 degrees Celsius. Jeremy and James will be driving a specially adapted pick up truck whilst Richard will be travelling on something a little less high tech - a sled pulled by a team of ten Canadian Inuit Dogs."

The hour-long special will air at 8pm before NBC's Heroes makes its terrestrial debut at 9pm.

But could anyone rip it in HD? Not so many people actually have HD sky box, let alone the ability to record it properly... So will there be rip?

I get the HD rips of The Office all the time, someone in the UK has to be able to do it properly.

As this is a special and not filmed in the studio, they can film it with HD equipment they've already got elsewhere, but the studio based stuff would have to be upgraded for the series to be HD, which i don't think they'll do yet. Hmm...my TV is HD-capable but I don't think my freeview box is.

I'm still unconvinced and deeply uncaring about HD generally.

an hour in the quality the bbc broadcasts is somewhere in the 4 Gig range, I suppose...
Everybody calm down, other highdef shows get released in 350 MB versions as well, and other BBC shows like Torchwood are available as High Def versions, so everybody will get their cake...
