Usually, 1 hour shows in 720p = ~1.1GB.

Think again: I said broadcast.

You think I said: Scene Rip that lets you put 4 eps on 1 DVD-5

Actually cameras themselves aren't that big of an investment. It's all the editing equipment that holds tv companies from jumping on the HD-train. And when you consider that 1080i/720p isn't compatible with 1080p (which is double bitrate), that's another issue.

So they either bought the editing service for just one special ep, or they actually upgraded their stuff images/smilies/smile.gif

I get rips from my OTA HDTV card and they are about 8 GB for a 1 hour show (uncompressed).

It would be fantastic to see Tg in HD !! Can't wait

"Filmed" being the key. If it's on film, they can do an HD transfer of the film. If it was shot on videotape, S.O.L. Over here they have gone back to film source on old TV shows (including Magnum P.I., Knight Rider, and Star Trek) to show them in HD. It's been common practice up until now for movies, and expensively produced TV shows to use film; low budget TV and news cameras used video tape.

I can't wait to see Top Gear in HD. I hope this is a permanent change.

Clarkson was whining about the cost of HD cameras in one of his column about six months ago. Now we know why.

Regarding downloads, there is plenty of HD content available in torrent land. Usually what they do to keep the size down is make it 1/2 the height and width of 1080, which makes it 960x520, better than DVD but not quite 720p.

And lastly, enjoy "Heroes". I loved it!

According that article it would add 20 percent to the cost of making Top Gear which is already a very expensive show. Tho that article is nearly a year old now

That's not entirely true - you still need an HDMI input on your specs to make the most of it, otherwise they'll downscale the image to SD.

Please don't mislead people like this in future.

Is it?? I wasn't aware of that... though I haven't checked in a while. I thought it was like £25 extra a month on top of £99 installation?

no it was £10 extra per month, now they have scrapped that. not sure on installation fee though.

u must pay an extra 10 for the HD service now instead.

Something useless like MotorWeak can afford to do HD shows. I say Top Gear reduce their budget for amphibious pickup trucks and dead cows and show me a review of an F430 in HD. wink wink.
