Default What does Chelsey mean?

I've often noticed the TG3 refer to something as the Chelsea-est or Chelsey-est something like "The Chelsiest of the Chelsey tractors".

What does that actually mean?

Ps. I think we need to make like a TG slang sticky/dictionary.

A Chelsea Tractor is basically a four wheel drive car driven by a wealthy middle class 'yummy mummy' - often living in Chelsea who only ever use it to take their one child to their posh public school.

Yeah like the prev guy said, usually 'soccer mom mobile' or something like that.

Some of the simpsons writers coined the phrase 'Ranger Rover mom' based on the usually useless attractive blonde moms who are seen driving their bratty kids in luxury SUVs in the LA area.

you forgot the mock roman pillars at the entrance to your chelsea residence and the horrible, gold tipped, wrought iron fencing and electric gates.

Yeah, essentially it's meant to indicate an SUV that's frequently spotted in the 'leafier' parts of town. Would the Escalade be one of those in the States?

The Aussie equivalent is "Toorak Tractor" (Toorak being an affluent suburb of Melbourne).

Yep, Escalade is definitely a "Chelsea Tractor" and probably the only American competitor left (in America). But, its a little more complicated because rappers and athletes like them too, so its urban chic and some people are turned off by that. So, just like everywhere else in the world, the ML, X5, XC90, Q7, LR3 and the Range Rover (and Canyonero!) rule when it comes to driving yourself to Starbucks, then to pick up the kids, all while talking on the iPhone, eating a Whole Foods snack, drinking your frapaccino, doing pilates, listening to NPR, trying to close on that brand new McMansion, all while driving in the left lane with your turn signal on.

Did I miss anything?

As people have said, Chelsea is a really expensive part of London where people feel the need to buy SUVs to be seen in, even though the only non-sealed surface their vehicles will ever see is their gravel driveways or the front lawn.

We're talking your average BMW X5, Mercedes M-Class, Porsche Cayenne or Hummer driver. Think the kind of person who lives in Beverly Hills.

As such, US people might call them Manhattan Mudpluggers (since I can't think of something for Beverly Hills right now, and I don't know enough about the US to say where else would be like that).

The area also gets associated with high-paid soccer players (or footballers, in UK parlance) and you get the same connotations that you'd use with "ballers" in the US. So when you hear about them talking about "a footballer's car" it might give you a better idea.

Is the Lincoln Navigator still around? That's relatively upmarket for an SUV, isn't it?

The Hummer could also be considered a Chelsea Tractor. Its just so gauche that a footballer would have to own it.

Can't believe I forgot the H2 and Oprah...must've forget Oprah and Doctor Phil. =D

As for the Navigator, I saw a new one today and thought "Wow, that's ugly...I mean, fell out of the ugly tree and hit every branch on the way down ugly." I don't see too many Navigators anymore...

Remember that the whole 'Tractor' part alludes to the fact that you see a lot of agricultural machinery in the Chelsea area. Sit on any junction in the Kensington, Chelsea or Fulham area and you will see a fair number of Land Rover Defender 110s with canvas backs. It's not all Range Rover Sports, some of these fools actually think they need their 4x4s in the city. Though maybe it's actual real farmers driving in to sell their stuff at the millions of farmer's markets that have sprung up in the last few years.
