Paris Considers Ban on Old Motorcycles and Cars

Last time I was in Paris apart from Clios, 207s, Meganes etc. it was full of Toyotas IQs, Mini Countrymen (??) and that kind of (modern) stuff so I don't know if that's going to make a lot of a difference to most people who drive into the center of the city.

Yeah, those were a totally great idea. You missed two categories though:

I want to own a car that gets that sticker. :p

Have yet to actually see a car with one of those. I think the old Viper gets one or something.

It's not an official sticker. It's a sign of protest. You can get one here if you got a car that fits.

Officially, every car without a sticker is considered to be in group 1. Both black and blue are "fan fiction".

Guess I saw a fake black one when they first came out. I was sure they were real.
Damn internet and my lack of research. :shakefist:

The skull and cross bones is a bit of a give away.

Exactly, and if you have a really old car, you are bound to have a modern car that you can take to the city centre anyway. It's a fact that modern cars are more efficient, so I don't see the problem with this.

I know many, many people who only have classic cars as their only transport. Of course, they are insane, but they do exist.

I predict it won't happen.

Well if it did, it wouldn't be enforced by anyone so much.

The bad news is, when Boris hears of the proposal, he will want to do the same for London. Again if implemented, now that WILL be enforced. (I suspect cameras plus fines.)

The previous socialist mayor started along this road years ago, Boris opposed it because politics. Now he has won re-election, he may think it is a good idea again.

I think the French regulations should be quite similar to ours. Here, cars have to pass emission tests and general condition test every 2 years after they are more than 4 years old. Motorcycles don't have to pass any emission tests at all and only have to pass the general condition test, too see if all lights and indicators are working, etc.

Same here for cars on the emissions, but there are annual safety inspections after just three years and probably similarly most other countries of the EU.(There is supposed to be a sort of convergence of "best practice" on motoring safety issues throughout the EU.)

Because a)it's fascist and b) not actually based on any empirical scientific evidence? There, now you have 2 reasons.

My car is barely at the cut off (98). I have more than one friend with their cars being made in early 90s. I hang out with a lot of 240sx(200sx in the UK) lovers and the latest that car was made here was 97 (fairly low number for that year at that). Many of them do NOT have a newer car to drive around, their daily tends to be something old and cheap that costs very little to replace if needed.

Well, London has the infrastructure with the congestion charge cameras and the fine mechanism. If any city could do it, it'd be London.

Does anyone else think that Ken and Boris should be the permanent guests on Have I Got News For You instead of being anywhere near elective office? This way, they can entertain people, everyone can keep an eye on them, and they can't do any real harm. And I'm talking as someone who wants Euro-style social democracy and as someone who actually likes Livingston.

True for the financial centre in the City, the "square mile" but Ken started on the suburbs out here by the airport with older truck bans. The signs went up before the laws were passed, then Boris won the election and scrapped it, I think. (years ago now.)

Which generation Golf do you think is more efficient? The one from 1996 or 2012?

No one is forcing you to own a 200/240SX and your American mentality does likely not reflect the one of French people.

Quite frankly, who really wants to drive in these huge cities unless absolutely necessary anyway? The traffic is ridiculous. I have been to London enough to say I don't want to drive there unless I really need to.

I wasn't aware that being a gearhead and/or liking older cars was exclusive to Americans.

Also the point I was making is that there are people who do drive older cars for w/e reason and I would think that Europe would have more of them seeing as how cars are more expensive there then in the US.

That's a different and completely unrelated to the discussion at hand.
