    10 of the Greatest Diesel Engines - Ever

    7. Caterpillar C12 Super Truck Racing Engine

    A True Factory Hot Rod

    * Engine Type: Four-cycle, six-cylinder, inline
    * Displacement: 732 ci (12.0L)
    * Bore and Stroke: 5.12x6.18 in
    * Aspiration: Twin turbocharged
    * Governed Speed: 2,500 rpm
    * Engine Weight: 2,270 lb
    * Maximum Power: 1,400 hp
    * Maximum Torque: 3,400 lb-ft

    * Why We Dig It: Anything that can propel a massive racing big rig to 100 mph in 7.9 seconds is pretty cool in our book. The Caterpillar team won several championships on the back of this fire-breathing monster because of its power and indestructibility.
    "I saw myself founding a new religion, marching
    into Asia riding an elephant, a turban on my
    head and in my hands the new Koran I would
    have written to suit my needs." - Napoléon Bonaparte

    "More than 60,000 Germans fell, not beneath the
    Roman arms and weapons, but, grander far,
    before our delighted eyes. May the tribes, I pray,
    ever retain if not love for us, at least hatred for
    each other; for while the destinies of empire bear
    hard upon us, fortune can give no greater boon
    than discord among our foes." - Germania, Tacitus

    Cool stuff, although not all of them run on diesel
    Where are those JCB engines?

    By the way the displacement in litres for MTU is wrong, it should be 65L.

        I dunno... I wouldn't call most of them "great" because they are only used in Utility vehicles. Booooring.

        Also, good diesel engines are a pretty new thing imho, most that are older than 10 years suck...hard. The new high-tech turbo diesels are the only ones that deliver something thats remotely similar to driving pleasure. (And if you list them, you should never forget the Merc and Audi V8 diesels, along with the BMW x35d engine)

          I would have liked to see more non-truck engines in there too.

            The Magazine is more about trucks and larger vehicles.

              which cars/trucks have which engine?
              I believe that 1.9TDI is great engine for normal cars - reliable, economic and enough power for day to day.
              What about the JTD from fiat? i've heard it's pretty good.

                  I agree, its one of the VAG's most popular engines. The R10s engine should be there, interesting ist though.

                    Aside from the obvious American truck bias (not that it's a bad thing), where's the JCB Duramax diesel that they used in the land speed record?

                    And to the cargo ship behemoth. I want to live in one of those...

                      the powerstroke?

                      LOL

                      Tell that to my neighbour who can't get his started in the winter.. or the other ford owners who wonder why they need a rebuild at 200K miles.. The only thing the powerstroke was good for was ripping the turbo and intercooler out at the graveyard and installing them in your mustang

                      it should be swapped with the cummins in that list..

                      other than that.. good list of engines

                          I'd have to have the Audi R10 Diesel in there now, it's going to prove to be a water mark in motorsports.
