Random Thoughts... [Automotive Edition]

The only ones I've seen here were in light industrial applications; generators, forklifts, etc. They make for a fantastically reliable and utterly unkillable power supply when good fuel consumption and longevity is needed and power isn't.

I wouldn't mind a little 1/4 ton pickup with a 4 cylinder NA diesel.

I doubt even the door of a pickup would weigh a quarter tonne...

It's a load capacity descriptor, not a total vehicle weight term. More at http://trucks.about.com/cs/usedadvice/a/load_capacity.htm . Oh, and we're talking short tons here, none of your metric crap :p.

EDIT: It's a bit like saying you have a twelve-second car. It means it does a twelve-second run down the quarter mile, not that it has a lifespan of twelve seconds. Unless it's a twelve-second Alfa, in which case it probably does.

 Labcoatguy's got it.

In good old 'mericuh the smallest fullsize truck you can get is normally designated, at least in slang, a "half-ton"; roughly what they can carry in the bed. A quarter ton is something like a Ford Ranger, Chevrolet S10, Toyota Truck/Tacoma/Hilux.

oh all right... well, tonnes and tons are pretty similar, but a quarter tonne isn't that much... do you really need a truck for that?

@Labcoatguy: yeah, I know what a 12 second car is, I've seen the Fast and the Furious. Too bad there's no the Practical and the Gas Guzzlers.

Well I finally conqured the water pump on my Disco. I would have done it sooner but it's not much fun working in 85 degree weather with the sun beating down so I was relegated to working in the evenings. After wrestling to get the old one off the new one went on very quickly and painlessly. And best of all...no leaks!

However, I also discovered a far more serious problem while I was under the hood. Fortunately the new part came in quickly and all is well now:

3/4 of the BMW 1-series looks great. It's the last quarter of its length that I don't agree with.

That wiring harness smoke looks great, I should order some. :D

I concur. It's because of the stubby boot, which I guess they couldn't help trying to shrink a 3er.

Dumb car I think anyway. The guys I've seen driving their brand new 135i coupes this summer with the top down have looked like such wankers. I hate to say it, but you just look extra douchey in a shrunken Bimmer like that.

Anyone else find humor in a company named after a large cat making a car that resembles a catfish?

I just read this whole thread and I went LOLWUT at the diesel truck beating the Corvette

diesel ftw!

<< has a diesel engine

I just got insurance for my Land Rover (so I can pick it up). Only cost me ?758 for a year and that's with both of my parents on the policy.

2 days ago a different company quoted me ?1700, so I'm slightly chuffed. :)

Sure. There's plenty of stuff you can stick in there that you wouldn't want/can't fit in a car. Good for people who want better gas mileage than a fullsize truck but carry stuff they wouldn't want in a car.

I guess you can carry around some real dirty shiznit if you're too lazy to lay out a blanket in the car... or even more dirty shiznit: ie a pile of manure. I wouldn't want that in the back of my car.... but as for size-wise? I can't think of much up to 250kg that wouldn't fit in the back of my dad's volvo....

Whoah. One of the two Mitsu dealerships in town has a RR Phantom. I'm pretty sure it's sitting in the show room. I have to get down there and get a close look at it (no rush, it's been there a while and it's not going to be sold any time soon). Only thing is it's on the whole other side of the city and don't really want to drive all that way... but I guess I have to... maybe once they get the new ralliarts so I can oggle those too.

A motorcycle. And you can't put it on its side because it's full of gas and oil.
