Awesome Thread... [Automotive Edition]

So most of you who know me know I hate technology. ;) Well sometimes there are instances where I am quite impressed with it and in awe. Case in point, my "thirsty" American V8 actually isn't that thirsty after all if I'm not hooning it around. This is a pretty typical outcome for me, 35+ MPG on the motorway up until about 80mph. The EPA rates this incorrect for highway MPG.

I posted it here because it's awesome. With the new 10spd autos the American V8 coupes from Ford and GM will get similar results most likely. We live in a great time for V8's, and it would be a shame to see them go. Power and decent good fuel economy, who knew?

One of the greatest sounding engines ever made, but for some reason the audio is crap.
Makes me think of the times I saw on of those in person. What a glorious sound.

Except 4 cylinder mode makes the car sound like ass. Keep it in V8 mode, IDGAF if my mileage is down. You don’t buy a V8 Sedan for economy.

4cyl mode does nothing to my exhaust, you hear nothing in that video with it on. And my exhaust is loud since I cut the mufflers off. ;) Didn't buy the car for fuel economy but it's nice to have it as a side effect because of good engineering.

Then the rentals I’ve had had something different. You’d have a nice low V8 rumble and then when it switched to 4cylinder mode, you’d get a drone similar to what happens when you put an aftermarket muffler on any 5.0L or 4.6L ford motor. It’s not as loud but, it’s there.

2017+ models have a larger diameter exhaust with an addition of an active exhaust system. Were those rentals 2017-2018?

Sportier than some sports cars. I love this thing so much.

Also pretty cool:

Listen to this. Not the machine, but the man.

That's kinda funny.
Sounds like he is trying to fart but has diarrhea.

Watch this! Fantastic onboard!

Porsche is giving the 919 a send off. In stead of just taking last years race car to shows and such, they have modified it by lifting out some of the FIA restrictions on fuel flow and aero, making it a mighty fast car: 12 seconds faster at Spa...

The 919's WEC career was remarkable, achieving 17 victories from its 33 races from 2014 to 2017, along with three constructors’ titles, three drivers’ titles, and three victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

[...]

Slightly modified? Here’s the unusual part: Porsche has been spotted testing the revised 919 at Spa-Francorchamps, with aerodynamic changes that take it beyond the version of the car that is homologated for use in the World Endurance Championship.

Most notably, there’s an enormous new rear wing which extends both higher and further back than is allowed under LMP1 regulations, as well as larger and more prominent side skirts.

Both presumably contribute to more efficient aerodynamics than allowed under conventional regulations, and both invite the assumption that while the 919 may be done with wheel-to-wheel competition, the world tour is looking like much more than just a simple jaunt from one motor show to another.

The clue to that is in the 1:41.770 just set by works driver Neel Jani around the 7km Spa circuit - almost eight tenths of a second quicker than Lewis Hamilton's outright lap record of 1:42.553 set in August 2017 in the Mercedes-AMG F1 W07. Along the way, Jani set a top speed of 223mph.

According to Team Principal Andreas Seidl, the project is designed to show the 919's potential freed from some of the constraints of WEC regulations. 'All six 2017 LMP1 drivers contributed to the project', Seidl confirmed.

'The 919 Evo is brutally impressive. It is definitely the fastest car I ever drove. The grip level is at a fully new dimension for me, I couldn’t imagine this amount beforehand,' said Jani after his run. 'We are not only faster than the F1 pole from 2017. Today’s lap was twelve seconds faster compared to our WEC pole position from last year!'

It’s not difficult to imagine the car now tackling some other iconic locations with high-profile lap times - such as Stefan Bellof’s 6:11.13 in a Porsche 956 around the Nürburgring Nordschleife. If the 919 Evo is capable of knocking a modern F1 car off its perch at Spa, Bellof's 1983 time must be there for the taking.

Someone snapped a little video of it undergoing testing:
