Then knock it in park? That's what automatic drivers are taught in the UK. It's bad practice to sit holding the car on the brake in drive, if only for blinding those behind you.

That was never mentioned during driving school here, nor have I ever noticed it being a problem myself... absolutely everyone holds the brake at a light.
