Oliver's son - 79 Opel Kadett

The amount of gunk on the cylinders and valves has been reduced. I opted against complete removal because of a lack of appropriate cleaning solution and cause I've read so much about converting the engine to later-model higher-compression cylinders that I sense another project coming my way anyways...

It's done!

Finishing touches:

I put the timing case cover and the v-belt pulley back on.

Then i installed a new starter motor.

Finally, the exhaust manifold, engine mounts, alternator and spark plug cables went back onto the engine.

Not pictured, but also done: Replaced the distributor finger and cap and put in a new breaker contact, replaced the thermostat.

Tomorrow, the engine's going back into the car - we'll see if it runs.

I was going to suggest popping by a machine shop to have the head examined to make sure it's surface was level, and perhaps a nice bath, but I see I'm far to late for that now. :p

Looking good though!

I checked the heads levelness with the equipment available and it looked good... well, we'll see how that goes....

If it goes, it'll just give you an excuse to do those upgrades you mentioned!

FAIL!

Got the engine back in and while it's running fine, it's leaking oil from between the engine block and the timing case. That's an area i never even touched. Anyways, time to get some more seals, rip the radiator out, take apart the timing case once again, remove the timing case, replace another seal, put it all back together... that's easily another two hours of work. :-(

Sadly, the crankshaft bearings are shot, which means that when I press the clutch the flywheel touches the engine block, stopping the engine. So the engine will go out of the Kadett once more next weekend.

 i never known anyone who managed to wear them out that much!

have you been keeping the clutch pressed in while waiting at the lights etc?

Nope.

I think it's partly a consequence of the engine being 30 years old with the same set of bearings, and partly a consequence of the additional stress my V-belt pulley removal efforts put on them.

Will you be able to get it going till ringmeet?
I won't speculate about this right now. I got new bearings ordered and will have them installed within the next ten days, but if that does the deal i currently can't tell.

IT RUNS!
Here are some shots of the disassembled clutch with scratch marks on the flywheel from the shot bearings:

So today I took the engine out again, then replaced the crank bearings (sadly I did not order a new set of connecting rod bearings, would have made sense to replace them as well), put it all back together (another oil pan gasket, kthx), put the engine into the car and...

...everthing works just fine.

The engine is running a bit rough and the valves rattle like a can of nails, but that was expected. Will make an appointment with the classic car specialist next week to give the engine a fine-tune.

[German]Sieht so aus als ob dieser Thermostat...

Ouch!

You should try to sell that one to Br?sel, the latest Werner movie looked like he desperately needs new Flachwitze.

Der ist aber noch gut, du. Den musst du nur etwas aufpolieren, dan geht dat wieder. </R?rich>
