Someone Else's Problem: Lunacy and Eternal Optimism part II - 2001 Disco 2 V8

Something I forgot to post earlier - today's red light of the day was SRS. The damn thing popped back on a second after it went out with the normal checks. I restarted and it stayed there. 30 minutes later after a short drive and some time to sit it was fine and was for the rest of the day. I blame the heavy rain we had yesterday. :dunno:

Today the Disco should be heading back oop north to the dealer I bought it from on a taxi of some kind, hopefully to get the hydraulics sorted.

I'm beginning to wonder if we shouldn't change that ferry booking......

I'm confident that it will be done with time to spare. The other Discovery is currently suffering from a broken exhaust and warped disc which will stop me from getting a new MOT on it this month.

2 weeks later and Bugsy is back. I meant to post about this earlier but I've been distracted. All the work required has been done and I just need to get my local specialists to investigate a small leak from one of the PAS hoses that would've been disconnected and reconnected as part of the work.

The drive back down from oop north was great, the AC is now pumping out nice cold air and there are no lights on the dashboard. :)

So, nearly a month on and I haven't said too much, other than a few cryptic clues as to what's going on. Mr. WorksFine has been kept in the loop, seems fair considering he'll be riding in and driving Bugsy in a fortnights time.

Two posts up I thought that was it, everything was done. How wrong I was. PAS still leaking badly and the error with the ABS had returned, so back it went. A week later I'm driving it home again. I had booked it in for an inspection once again by my local specialists while I was away on holiday so dropped by to hand in the keys, only to have the ABS error pop up again! They were informed and would pick Bugsy up while I was away. Unfortunately due to a power failure at their end that didn't happen, so when I returned home it had been sitting for a week without moving, and now had almost no PAS fluid. Good thing they didn't try and drive it.

A couple of days later (last Tuesday) they did pick it up and got to work on the problems, finding that there was clearly some confusion at the dealer as to what needed to be done (I can't say much more than that). Parts replaced and a gearbox oil change later, I picked it up last night. An inspection after the work was completed shows no worries for the Ringmeet, as long as nothing comes up with the ABS system before I go. I just need to put some miles on it.

Anyway, along with the stuff I bought today for the Ringmeet I also got some detailing goodies to have a go at fixing some of the scratches on the paintwork. There aren't too many but they really stand out on the Oslo blue paintwork. I got this little lot which includes scratch repairer, something a friend had used with good results after he drove in to a hedge in his non-LR. The wax and mitt will get some use too, never used a clay mitt or bar but after seeing how good it is I just wanted to try it. :)

I also have some North American spec. cup holders coming to fit, ones that KaJuN should know and will hold massive cups along with drinks bottles, hopefully. I also have an AUX in adapter coming to replace the CD changer on the radio, me and MWF had spoken about using FM transmitters but I thought screw it I'll be buying this thing anyway, if I have time to fit it then great but if not then I'm not losing anything. :)

I did some other things yesterday:

The rear plate holder is a little scruffy because it's the one I made for Keely from the second plate holder I bought last year.

Tonight I test fitted my GROM aux. in adapter that replaces the CD changer.

allows me to connect a USB stick or android phone for integrated audio control or a 3.5mm plug for normal aux. in. After slicing my fingers trying to use the radio removal tools to get the head unit out it finally wiggled free and I could plug it in. Some messing around later I read that on Android 3.0+ you have to disable USB debugging and I was away. It works great, now I just have to wait for the 3.5mm cable to arrive before I can fit the radio all the way in.

I was able to do this all without having to disconnect the power and risk the code I have not being right, a good thing since the alternative was to take the radio out and send it away for AUX conversion. It also charges the phone without having to have a 12v charger and a cable. :)

I did, and so far it's turned out to be a bit of a nightmare.

Anyway, I made some labels today, I'm going to need them.

You may find out what they're for tonight.

I thought Defenders were sold on exclusive basis to murderers and "into-SM" folks... suppose they were designed with that in mind :p

...made some labels today...

 I give up, now it gets interesting!

More work today, fitting my flat wiper blade conversion kit. Standard wiper blades are difficult enough to get for a D2 and modern flat blades just don't exist other than this kit.

Also, I fitted my Expert Mode labels and as promised here are the photos:

Yes, they cover over warning lights. The ABS is still acting up but with limited time I'm just going to live with it. Keely doesn't have ABS anyway so it's not like I'm really losing out, I'm not planning on driving like a retard and I know how to drive a non-ABS vehicle anyway - hence the label. The other two lights are for off-road features and don't get used on road anyway.

They're even illuminated!

Finally my North American spec. cup holders turned up. I knew these would be big but I wasn't prepared for just how big they are. I know it's hard to tell from the photos but here's a Coke bottle in the holder, with the insert fitted:

Here's my rather large drinks bottle in the cup holder, without the insert:

I like the D1's system of informing you there was a problem with the ABS, by taking out all braking ability.

You sly devil! Does that mean you're about to dig the central difflock out? ;)

Certainly would if I was using this thing off road, but as I have the other Discovery it's strictly on road only so it's not a problem. The cable kits to reinstall it are crazy expensive.

I had ABS removed from Keely because I didn't trust it. Fortunately in the D2 the brakes work fine. :D

You do realise that "x" is an unknown quantity and "spurt" is a drip under pressure?

I'd heard it as "Ex" being something that has been, so someone who used to be a drip under pressure. That describes me doing an emergency stop in the Series 3 quite well, so I do consider myself an expert in stopping non-ABS cars. :D

Lol, i used to people from Merc club telling me "oh noes! Your barge doesn't have BAS/ASR!!! You're a potential dean man, according to the star-ratings, blahblahblah..."

Sometimes i tell them horror stories, about driving cars with 4 drums and no vacuum booster.

Never tried that, the Series 3 at least had a booster.

Anyway my 3.5mm cable turned up today and it's now all fitted. The playback through USB is a little finicky, having stopped working completely for a while and then suddenly working again it showed me that it doesn't work with the USB pass-through on my car dock.

The 3.5mm connection is great though and it seems to charge the phone even when through the car dock so at the very least I have aux. in and a charge cable. :)
