Those open-wheelers look like they'd be really uncomfortable but amazingly good fun.

where do those open wheel racers come from? they're custom made to participate in the hillclimbs, or are they old, written off F2 cars or sth similar?

Short answer is... both. Either custom-built, or old open-wheelers (F3000, F3, whatever) modified for hillclimbing.

Pilbeam's like Paul O'Connell's are built to order, and are very very fast, some single seaters are powered by the Hayabusa Turbo engine. While more are from Formula 3

Rory Stephens Radical SR3 is powered by a Hayabusa Turbo, and is extremely fast...

Here's a bit of video from Corkscrew Hill (if its ok to post it) from Saturday, about half way thru you'll see Simon McKinley in his Lant RT2 have a bit of a moment...but it gives a good idea of their speed.

In the background is Ballyallaban Hill which will be used for round 4 of the championship, its 2.2 miles, and in 2009 Sylvester Mullins in a Gould set a new record time of 96.17secs for the 2.2 miles.
If you ever get the chance, or live nearby, its worth having a look at these folks in action...

Yep, its a good hill...

You should see Simon McKinley (Red Lant) on Ballyallaban Hill Co Clare, scariest driving you'll see just about any place. Simon is just incredible to watch.. At about 1:38 you'll see him sideways as he enters the Carpark. He set a new hill record on that run...

not the hill that is awesome, but the (lack of) grip those things have. it's like ice skating with jet pack strapped to your back!
